Games and Movement Teacher (Grades 1–4) Block Specialist

Job Description – December 2025

Brooklyn Waldorf School is looking for an experienced teacher to deliver a special block of movement education to Grades 1‑4. The opportunity is open‑ended as long as it is aligned with Waldorf principles of Movement education. The specific area is open‑ended depending on candidates’ abilities and interests but must be non‑competitive and age‑appropriate (some examples include dance, capoeira, contact improv, and circus arts).

The Games and Movement curriculum in a Waldorf school differs from a traditional Physical Education curriculum in a number of ways. Cooperative games and activities aimed at building children’s awareness of their own bodies in space take precedence and competitive games, particularly team sports, are not introduced until the later elementary years.

Classes meet twice weekly, each with Grades 1‑4 for a total of 8 classes per week. The opportunity is currently envisioned as a month‑long commitment but there is flexibility for the right candidate.

All candidates must have strong classroom management. At Brooklyn Waldorf, we use Responsive Classroom to guide our approach to classroom management.

• Design and implement a Games and Movement curriculum for grades 1‑4 aligned with Waldorf educational principles.
• Lead outdoor and indoor movement classes that encourage playfulness, coordination, rhythm, and cooperation.
• Establish healthy daily and weekly rhythms that support students’ physical and emotional well‑being.

• Background in Movement Education, Physical Education, or a related field preferred.
• Experience teaching elementary‑age children.
• Strong classroom management and interpersonal communication skills.
• Enthusiasm for outdoor education and a love of play and movement with children.

The Brooklyn Waldorf School was founded in 2005 by a body of parents and Waldorf graduates who sought a nurturing space within the city where their children could discover and explore their inner potential.
