Position Summary
$30.00 - $35.00/hour
The Children's Aid Adult Education Program at the Salome Urena Campus offers classes in English as a Second Language (ESOL) Levels I - III and social-emotional learning (SEL). Classes meet twice a week from 6:00pm-9:00pm during two academic cycles (September-January and February-end of May). The ESOL Instructor delivers high‑quality English instruction to non‑native speakers, fostering language development, academic progress, and cultural integration.
Lessons are engaging and aligned with New York State standards and student language proficiency levels, utilizing diverse teaching methods.
- Promote the organization’s Mission, Vision, and Core Values and ensure alignment with policies and procedures.
- Establish clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects and communicate them to students.
- Assess student English proficiency using BEST PLUS 2.0.
- Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
- Instruct students individually and in groups using lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and other methods.
- Plan and conduct balanced instruction, demonstrations, and work time that encourages observation, questioning, and investigation.
- Enforce rules for behavior and procedures that maintain order among students.
- Conduct three assessments per student (pre‑assignment, mid‑assessment, post‑assessment) to ensure program indicators are met.
- Observe and evaluate students’ work to determine progress and suggest improvement.
- Adapt teaching, facilitation methods, and instructional materials to meet varying needs, abilities, and interests.
- Maintain accurate, complete student records as required by policy.
- Provide rigorous instruction that accelerates English aligned with New York State standards.
- Prepare students for further education by encouraging exploration of learning opportunities.
- Serve as a liaison between students, families, and the school, providing cross‑cultural information to foster positive relationships.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field.
- At least two years of teaching experience (highly preferred).
- Able to teach adults in Core English as Second Language or social‑emotional learning curriculum.
