Position Summary:

The Children’s Aid Adult Education Program at the Salome Urena Campus offers classes in English as a Second Language (ESOL) Levels I – III and social‑emotional learning (SEL). The program is offered in two cycles (September–January and February–end of May) with classes meeting twice a week from 6:00 pm–9:00 pm. The ESOL Instructor delivers high‑quality English language instruction to non‑native speakers, fostering language development, academic progress, and cultural integration.

The instructor designs and implements engaging, effective lessons aligned with New York State standards and student proficiency levels, using diverse teaching methods to support varied learning styles.

Responsibilities
  • Understand and promote the organization’s Mission, Vision, and Core Values.
  • Establish clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects and communicate them to students.
  • Assess student English language proficiency using the BEST PLUS 2.0.
  • Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups using lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order.
  • Conduct three assessments per student (pre‑assignment, mid‑assessment, post‑assessment).
  • Observe and evaluate students’ work to determine progress and make suggestions for improvement.
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet varying needs, abilities, and interests.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by policy.
  • Provide rigorous instruction that supports acceleration of English aligned with the Department of New York State Standard.
  • Encourage students to explore learning opportunities and persevere with challenging tasks.
  • Serve as a liaison between students, families, and the school, providing cross‑cultural information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related subject.
  • At least two years of teaching experience (highly preferred).
Key Competencies
  • Able to teach adults in Core English as Second Language or social‑emotional learning curriculum.

Salary: $30.00 – $35.00 per hour.
