Professional School Senior Associate Dean for Research
POSITION DETAILSThe City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy (SPH) is committed to teaching, research, and service to create a healthier New York City and to promoting equitable, efficient, and evidence-based solutions to pressing health problems facing cities around the world. Accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health, CUNY SPH offers a range of innovative master's and doctoral degree programs and conducts applied research and community programming with a focus on improving urban, national, and global population health and equity.
CUNY SPH is planning to move to the new state-of-the-art Science Park and Research Campus (SPARC) in Kips Bay in 2030. SPARC will serve as an educational, life sciences, health care and public health hub for Kips Bay, New York City, and the metropolitan region. It will expand opportunities for population health, clinical, and laboratory-based biomedical research, as well as for educational, training, practice, and service partnerships for SPH faculty, students, and staff.
CUNY SPH is seeking an experienced, dynamic leader with a proven track record in directing public health research to serve as the Senior Associate Dean for Research. Reporting to and in collaboration with the Dean, this individual will provide strategic leadership in promoting and expanding research endeavors. They will have an opportunity for an underlying faculty appointment in one of the school’s four academic departments, relevant to their disciplinary expertise.
KeyAreas of Responsibility
Leading the Office of Sponsored Projects and Research (SPaR), which includes pre- and post-award research support, assuring human subjects’ protection and research compliance.
Developing and implementing a strategic plan for diversifying and expanding the school’s research portfolio and funding streams, in conformance with its mission, vision and values.
Assessing and optimizing the school’s research-related infrastructure, procedures, practices, and metrics.
Strategically diversifying, expanding, and stabilizing sources of research revenue to include governmental, corporate, philanthropic, and other sources, in collaboration with faculty, senior leadership, staff and students.
Leading efforts to design and implement a laboratory-based component to the school’s research and educational portfolio, including facility design, operations, training and education, and faculty and staff recruitment.
Negotiating to ensure the adequacy of research facilities and resources across the school’s research endeavors.
Formalizing collaborations and creating a network with existing research partners and new potential partners, such as in the public health, health care, and biomedical sectors.
Assuring that all aspects of research and research funding conform with the highest ethical standards and with the school’s mission, vision, and values.
Serving as the central point of contact and responsible party for internal and external research related inquiries, award administration, funding, effort certification and compliance requirements.
Providing oversight and support to the school’s centers and institutes in developing and implementing strategic plans to assure their continued stability, strategic growth, and success.
Building a culture of mentoring within the school and collaborating with faculty facilitators to lead a vibrant research mentorship program for faculty and doctoral students, including developing external funding streams for doctoral students.
Developing and overseeing the implementation of training and support for faculty, staff, and graduate students on research-related topics, such as through ad hoc training, seminars, and formal course offerings, as appropriate and necessary.
Collaborating with school leadership, faculty, staff and students on school wide events and activities that have a research and/or scholarly component.
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.
