Reporting to the Associate Dean for Advising & Experiential Learning, the Assistant Dean/Director provides strategic vision and operational leadership for the University College's academic advising functions. This role oversees student-centered advising practices, manages academic policy decisions (including appeals and petitions), and fosters a collaborative culture of retention and engagement. The Assistant Dean/Director serves as a primary liaison to university partners to ensure advising services are integrated with institutional goals and student success initiatives.

1.

Strategic Leadership & Personnel Management | 30%
  • Visionary Leadership:
    Align advising practices with the university's mission and strategic priorities; develop and execute a comprehensive strategic plan for the department.
  • Staff Supervision:
    Direct recruitment, training, and performance evaluation for a team of 13 advising and administrative staff which includes five direct reports. Foster a culture of professional excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Budget & Resource Management:
    Strategically allocate departmental resources and manage the advising office budget in coordination with University College leadership.
  • Policy Oversight:
    Establish criteria and provide final oversight for suspension appeals, readmission applications, and academic petitions.
2. Student Success Operations & Policy | 25%
  • Advising Excellence:
    Oversee the delivery of developmental, student-centered advising that leverages innovative strategies and technology (e.g., virtual tools, student information systems) to enhance accessibility.
  • Retention Initiatives:
    Design and implement interventions for at-risk students, including those facing academic crises or barriers to graduation.
  • Policy Advocacy:
    Interpret, uphold, and initiate changes to university academic policies to improve institutional efficiency and student progress.
  • Direct Support:
    Maintain a limited student caseload and support students/families in resolving complex academic issues.
  • Exploring Majors/Careers Services Integration:
    Collaborate strategically with the Senior Program Director of career education in the University Career Center to co-develop and operationalize integrated academic advising and career coaching models that guide exploring students and students in major transition.
3. Campus Collaboration & Outreach | 20%
  • Liaison & Partnership:
    Foster strong partnerships with Enrollment Management, The Peer Hub, Admissions, Career Center, and other academic units to ensure a seamless student transition and integrated support.
  • University Committees:
    Represent the department on university-wide committees related to student success, orientation, and academic standards.
  • Integrated Programming:
    Coordinate presence at admissions events, orientation, and welcome week; collaborate on co-curricular initiatives like study abroad and experiential learning.
4. Data Analysis & Program Assessment | 15%
  • Evidence-based Strategy:
    Transform complex institutional data (e.g., retention trends, course demand, and sequencing) into actionable insights for UGE leadership.
  • Quality Assurance & Benchmarking:
    Lead rigorous program reviews and benchmarking against peer institutions to measure the impact of advising interventions.
