Medical Professor (Clinical) - Med Ed FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The CUNY School of Medicine (CUNY SoM) located in the heart of Harlem, New York, is the only medical in the City University of New York system and the only public medical school in Manhattan. Building upon 50 years of success as the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, the institution transitioned to the CUNY School of Medicine (SoM) in 2016.
The CUNY SoM offers an accelerated BS/MD degree (7-year program) and a Physician Assistant Master’s Degree (27 months program). True to its legacy of access, opportunity, and community transformation, the medical school’s mission remains to recruit highly talented students as diverse as New York City itself. CUNY SoM places a special emphasis on the recruitment of those who are underrepresented in the field of medicine and on training high quality, culturally competent health professionals and scientists equipped to address the healthcare needs of New York’s medically under-served communities.
As a major priority, CUNY SoM also seeks to enhance the recruitment and retention of senior leadership, faculty, and staff to more closely reflect the diversity of our student body.
The Assistant Medical Professor will participate in education and research at the undergraduate and graduate level for the seven-year BS/MD program. This is a tenure track position in the title of Clinical Professor. The appointee will report to the Chair of the Department of Medical Education.
Duties include:Teaching and Curriculum Development
- Contribute to the Bioethics education as a teacher and assist with evaluations and improvements
- Serve as a resource and faculty member for clinical and research ethics
- Participate in other teaching such as Problem Based Learning facilitation
- Collaborate on Humanities in Medical Education programing and Narrative Medicine Teaching
- Serve on Department, School and/or University committees as needed
- Serve as a member of professional societies and organizations in addressing current issues in health professions education, educational philosophy and medical ethics.
- Actively pursue independent research interests and collaborative research opportunities with emphasis on publication of books, book chapters and scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals
- Collaborate CUNY-wide to develop scholarship and externally supported projects in education, focusing on ethics, professional identity development and professional values and behavior.
- Support faculty and students in developing research projects by providing qualitative methods expertise
- Collaborate on the design and conduct of the Medical Professional Identity Formation and Night on Call research programs including the development of Artificial Intelligence to support these research missions.
- Participate in the supervision of post graduate trainees in relevant fields of expertise.
- Lead planning and implementation of a biannual symposia on topics relevant to the mission of the CSOM
The successful candidate will have formal training at the doctorate-level and experience in health professions education and philosophy research and scholarship.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience and a 3-6 year track record in undergraduate and medical school Narrative Medicine and philosophy teaching, and with the assessment of Professional Identity Formation and collaborative research.
- Knowledge of health professions education (including bioethics and narrative medicine) and qualitative research methods
- A record of significant achievement in profession or field of expertise. Also required are demonstrated or promised evidence of success as a teacher and the ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
Salary range - $125,000 - $135,000
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
