Job Overview

The Chapin School, an independent K-12 day school for girls located in New York City, seeks a student-centered, collaborative, and innovative educator to serve as Middle School Class 5 Humanities Teacher and Advisor.

The Middle School Class 5 Humanities Teacher and Advisor will be adept at teaching English Language Arts and Social Studies. This teacher will also serve as an advisor. This position necessitates a thorough understanding of middle school children as well as a desire to work with and advocate for them.

Chapin’s next Middle School Humanities Teacher and Advisor will be:

An educator who demonstrates a commitment to innovation and interdisciplinary curriculum development by

  • Designing and implementing high quality, engaging learning experiences built around intellectual exploration and joyful discovery.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues to prepare, implement, and document appropriate lesson plans that meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all students.
  • Identifying and facilitating interdisciplinary opportunities between the literacy/English and social studies/history curriculum.
  • Aligning the program with core curriculum competencies.
  • Using diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment data to inform teaching and learning and set individual student goals.

A student-centered educator who values each student’s voice, experience, and English Language Arts and who

  • Demonstrates effective pedagogy, particularly in response to the needs of students with a variety of backgrounds, learning needs, and interests.
  • Understands and appreciates the middle school learner within the context of pre-adolescent development.
  • Believes that in order for young people to thrive, they must see in the curriculum both themselves and others.
  • Embodies a growth mindset and empowers students to develop their skills and see themselves as readers, writers, and researchers.

An educator who actively cultivates a classroom and community of belonging by

  • Engaging students in the process of co-creating a healthy and supportive learning environment.
  • Cultivating an inclusive classroom that promotes diverse points of view and constructive dialogue.

A partner to students, their parents, and colleagues in teaching and learning by

  • Simultaneously challenging and supporting students, fostering joy, intellectual curiosity, and love of learning.
  • Collaborating with grade level teachers, department members, and learning support teams to plan curriculum, set expectations, assess students’ achievement levels, and differentiate instruction.

  • Maintaining open and professional communication with students, families, and colleagues.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Previous Middle School teaching experience
  • Advisory experience or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in literacy and/or history education, elementary education, or other related fields
  • Experience with a variety of curricular programs such as The Writing Revolution, Notice & Note, and the workshop model
  • Familiarity and commitment to project-based and inquiry-based learning

Compensation for this position will be commensurate with experience. The range is $75,000–$130,000 annually.
