Work Hours:

15 hours/week during school year from 9/8 to 6/15. 30-35 hours/week during 6-8 week summer programming. After school hours vary by site.
Location (in person):
Bushwick, Williamsburg, Fort Greene, Corona, East Elmhurst, and Jamaica, Queens.

ABOUT COALITION FOR HISPANIC FAMILY SERVICES (CHFS):

CHFS is a community-based, family-focused organization of color providing an array of services to children and families in North Brooklyn and Western Queens. For over 35 years, CHFS has worked with vulnerable populations that include children in foster care, seriously emotionally disturbed children, youth, and families at risk of abuse and neglect. Our strength-based model also supports progressive youth development programs, family support services and community school partnerships.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

The Arts & Literacy Youth Development Program is an innovative and comprehensive after school and summer program serving Brooklyn and Queens youth ages 5-14. We provide education, creative arts, youth leadership, and health programming. The program builds leadership and literacy through creative writing, visual arts, drama, photography, video, music, yoga, creative movement/dance, and apprenticeships. We engage entire families through monthly family literacy workshops, parent organizing, and comprehensive services available through the agency’s other programs.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Teaching Assistants are responsible for assisting the teacher of the class and helping with the implementation of all program activities. Teaching Assistants will support the teacher, participate and assist in all class activities, act as a role model, facilitate snack and bathroom time, help students with homework and help maintain the organization of cabinets and libraries. There are opportunities for Teaching Assistants to teach short lessons to the students in content areas of interest to them.

Teaching Assistants should possess outstanding organizational skills and interest in working with a team, and familiarity with Latino, African American and Asian culture.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Collaborate in designing literacy-based art curricula that align with recognized learning standards
  • Support students with one-on-one tutoring
  • Collaborate in the implementation of STEM activities in the literacy-based arts curricula
  • Lead classes in the absence of lead teachers
Student Supervision & Safety:
  • Always supervise and ensure the safety and welfare of students, including during field trips or activities outside of program site
  • Keep students engaged and create a classroom culture of respect and participation
  • Maintain accurate attendance for assigned students
Communication &

Collaboration:
  • Collaborate with Teaching Artists and/or Group Leaders
  • Regularly check emails and respond in a timely manner, at least within 24 hours
Program Support:
  • Participate in events to recruit and retain program participants
  • Participate in agency-wide events
  • Participate in all mandatory assigned trainings
  • Any other duties as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent classroom management skills
  • Working knowledge of NYC DOE curricula
  • Experience working with diverse youth populations
  • Candidate must be available for the entire program hours, duration of the school year and summer months.
  • Paid, mandatory staff trainings will take place prior to start dates sometime in early September and before Summer programming begins in late June.
Preferred but not required:
  • Experience working in Youth Services is preferred
  • Bilingual capabilities (Spanish/Mandarin/French)
