General Description:
SUNY Niagara has a need for a part‑time Music Instructor for our American Popular Music course. This course is taught in person in a classroom setting on our Sanborn, NY campus. It is a survey of American popular music from its roots to the present day, tracing the acculturation process to the creation of Jazz and Rock n’ Roll and to present‑day popular music forms.
It examines American music as it relates to cultural and social contexts, discussing music in terms of structure and artistic value. The ability to read music notation is not required. The course is required for music majors and recommended for non‑music majors or students without previous music experience.
Recruitment and application: SUNY Niagara will accept applications on a continuous basis. Openings may or may not exist at any given time. Applications are evaluated as needed, and candidates will be contacted when the department has an opening. Candidates who submit information may or may not be notified of their application status.
Typical Work Activities- Teach course on campus.
- Track attendance as needed.
- Report on student learning outcomes at the end of the semester.
- Report grades at the conclusion of the semester.
Ability to work with, and teach a diverse student population. Ability to speak in front of groups. Must effectively communicate with students, co‑workers, supervisors and the campus community. Must develop, prepare and present information. Must operate computers. Must physically perform the duties of the position and adjust any teaching to accommodate Americans with Disabilities Act provisions.
Required Qualifications- Three years of experience teaching at a high school or college level.
- Master’s Degree in Music or a related field.
- Experience using Microsoft Office software such as Excel and Word.
- Experience with the Brightspace learning management system.
