Union College - Visiting Assistant Professor, 19th/20th c. U.S. History

Union College invites applications for the position of one-year Visiting Assistant Professor in U.S. History, beginning September 1, 2026. Applications are due by February 15, 2026.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent preparation to teach courses in 19th and/or 20th century U.S. history, specialty open. The normal teaching load at Union College is six courses over three trimesters. The candidate would be expected to offer chronological surveys or thematic courses at the 100- or 200-level, including existing classes from the History Department’s current catalog. Teaching experience as an instructor of record preferred, as well as ability to offer classes that complement those of the Department’s current faculty.

Ph.D. in History or closely related field required at time of appointment (September 1, 2026).

About the History Department:

The History Department at Union College offers undergraduate courses that range from introductory surveys, through more focused topical courses, to advanced seminars. Many of these are writing-intensive courses that contribute to Union’s Writing Across the Curriculum program. All history majors write a senior thesis, a significant independent project directed by a History professor. Faculty teach courses in their respective areas of expertise, including by region, African, American (colonial, nineteenth, and twentieth century), East Asian, European (medieval, early modern, and modern), Latin America, South Asian, as well as topics such as digital history, environmental history, history of gender and identity, history of science and technology, Jewish history, and public history.

Department members are active researchers with a strong publication record with prominent journals and publishers.

Compensation:

The annual salary range for this position is $68,500-$70,500
. Except for roles with a set rate of pay, the wage/salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The stated hiring rate/range represents the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the rate/range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
