Within the larger scope of formal and informal learning within the Programs & Services Department (PSD) and reporting to the Director of Programming, the Environmental Education Coordinator is  responsible forenvironmentalprogramming throughout the Queens Public Library (QPL) system.


** This is a temporary grant funded position through September 30, 2026.**

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Within the larger scope of formal and informal learning within the Programs & Services Department (PSD) and reporting to the Director of Programming, the Environmental Education Coordinator is  responsible forenvironmentalprogramming throughout the Queens Public Library (QPL) system. The Environmental Education Coordinator will  be tasked with the coordination and delivery ofenvironmentaleducationprograms and workshops for people of all ages throughout the Library system; development of new and innovativeenvironmentalprograms for customers living in Queens;

and collaborating with government agencies and community-based partners to deliver free and paidenvironmentalofferings. The Environmental Educator  works in collaboration with Programs & Services staff, Community Library Services,environmentaleducators at the Hunters Point Library andEnvironmental Education Center , the Children’s Library and Discovery Center at Central Library, and with other departments such as Information Technology, Marketing and Facilities to ensure successful marketing and delivery of programs.

  • Responsible for presenting workshops at community libraries throughout the QPL system, for both adult and K-12 audiences that inform and inspire community members aroundenvironmentaljustice, recycling, composting, water conservation and climate resiliency.
  • Works with Community Library Managers, Marketing, IT, Facilities and PSD staff on scheduling, marketing, setting up and teaching workshops.
  • Updates and customizes workshops and related presentation or other materials as necessary; assists in the development of workshop descriptions, activities and materials lists, acquisition and maintenance of appropriate instructional materials and props, pre- and post-class information, and appropriate assessments of the programs.
  • Ensures compliance with health and safety measures in theenvironmentaleducationprograms.
  • In conjunction with QPL staff deliveringenvironmentalprograms, identifies existing programs and workshops to scale to other libraries throughout the QPL system.
  • Designs developmentally appropriate and innovativeenvironmentalprograms for customers that connect them to their local ecosystems.
  • Trains community librarians to deliver these programs so that they can be sustainably offered at more libraries.
  • Builds and expands relationships with Queens and New York City-basedenvironmentalorganizations that offer free outreach and educational community events (e.g., NYC Department of Sanitation, Big Reuse, Lower East Side Ecology Center), as well as paid programming (e.g., NY Hall of Science, Queens Botanical Garden, Queens Zoo).
  • Builds relationships with new local, state, and otherenvironmentaleducation, community science, and allied organizations.
  • Works with Community Library Managers to schedule community events at libraries and recommends paidenvironmentalprogramming for customers of all ages.
  • Attends meetings with stakeholders in various departments to define responsibilities and coordination with other departments.
  • Enters all workshops, programs, and events into the marketing database to track the number of workshops, number of libraries where workshops are presented, and attendance. Enters marketing requests into the marketing system to ensure that marketing materials are delivered on a timely basis.
  • Works with the Queens Public Library Foundation (QPLF) to ensure the successful delivery of grant-funded programming, including providing data on allenvironmentaleducationprograms.
  • Coordinates with PSD administrative staff on procurement, ordering of supplies, shipping, and IT requests, and contracting of external vendors.
