Environmental Science Teacher - 9th/10th Grade Summer Institute
Location:
In person at 610 W 112th Street, New York, NY 10025
Schedule:
Weekly, October 2025 – June 2026. Saturdays, Part‑time, hourly paid.
Liberty LEADS, a NYC-based college access program, serves underrepresented 5th‑12th grade students. We seek a passionate, knowledgeable Environmental Science Teacher to lead a dynamic 9th‑10th grade course focused on climate change, renewable energy, and related career pathways.
Key Responsibilities- Design and implement engaging lesson plans centered on climate change, renewable energy, and broader environmental issues.
- Foster critical thinking and scientific inquiry through real‑world case studies, current events, and local environmental issues.
- Guide students through lab activities, field studies, and experiments related to sustainability, energy sources, and environmental impacts.
- Create a classroom environment that encourages collaboration, problem‑solving, and active participation in environmental discussions.
- Assess student learning through projects, presentations, and group activities, providing meaningful feedback to support academic growth.
- Develop and lead project‑based learning experiences such as energy audits, climate action projects, and experiments with solar, wind, geothermal, and other renewable energy technologies.
- Collaborate with community organizations, local environmental agencies, or green energy companies for experiential learning opportunities.
- Inspire and empower students to become environmental stewards and leaders in sustainability efforts within their school and community.
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Earth Science, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
- Teaching certification or license in Secondary Education with emphasis on science subjects.
- Experience teaching or working in climate science, energy, or environmental sustainability.
- Strong understanding of current climate science, renewable energy technologies, and environmental policy.
- Excellent communication, organization, and classroom management skills.
- Reliable Wi‑Fi and computer access.
- Attend mandatory curriculum planning session with co‑teachers and advisors (dates TBD).
- Attend mandatory June 2025 orientation (Saturday TBD).
- Physical requirements:
walking up and down stairs, supervising outdoor activities (walking up to 20 city blocks, hiking, etc.).
$40–$50 per hour.
