Job Summary
The nocturnist psychiatrist on the inpatient service is responsible for after-hours coverage of assigned units and services in accordance with departmental and hospital standards of care. They work closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, high-quality care of all assigned patients.
Time Expectations- Presence in the hospital for three to four consecutive overnight shifts per week.
- Opportunity to participate in additional compensated coverage outside the salaried hours.
The Inpatient Nocturnist Psychiatrist will provide psychiatric coverage overnight to all patients on adult civilian, adult forensic, and child and adolescent inpatient units. They will also cover behavioral emergencies and urgent psychiatric consults on the medical and surgical units.
General Responsibilities- Provide psychiatric and medical care to all assigned patients in collaboration with nursing staff, other disciplines, and consultants from other services when applicable.
- Adhere to appropriate clinical documentation to ensure compliance with current standards of clinical practice and all regulatory and accreditation standards.
- Teach/supervise trainees and students as assigned.
- Maintain effective communication with patients, patients' families, and other disciplines.
- Deliver care to patients as needed.
- Deliver care in accordance with specific behavioral plans for patients.
- Work with the nursing staff to implement departmental interventions for patients at risk for falls.
- Work closely with the medical providers assigned to inpatient psychiatry to assess and treat medical needs of patients.
- Assist in patient transfers between medicine and psychiatry.
- Respond to and manage behavioral crises on all psychiatry and medicine/surgery units, and be available to assist during medical emergencies.
- Utilize seclusion and restraints in accordance with departmental policies.
- Review the electronic handoff at the beginning of each shift and carry out required tasks.
- Ensure appropriate handoff at the end of each shift.
- Maintain communication with nursing staff.
- Seek help from the directors of relevant psychiatric services when appropriate.
- Be familiar with all departmental policies and protocols.
- Complete all required activities related to maintaining credentialing and other mandates at both Bellevue and NYU.
- Complete yearly flu vaccination and fit test requirements and documentation.
- Ensure that all documentation in the EMR is accurate and complete.
- Complete legal documents on patients if applicable.
- Graduation from an approved medical school.
- Completion of a residency in psychiatry at an approved institution.
- Possession of clinical and other skills ensuring competence in completion of specified duties.
- License to practice medicine in the state of New York.
- American Board of Psychiatry Eligibility/Certificate in Psychiatry.
