Overview
Washington Heights Psychiatric Unit (WHU), an Office of Mental Health (OMH) Joint Commission accredited facility, is recruiting Board Certified or Board Eligible Psychiatrists to provide outpatient psychiatric treatment to individuals with serious mental illness.
ResponsibilitiesAs a Psychiatrist at WHU, you will provide comprehensive, patient-centered and recovery-focused treatments to individuals with mental illness 18 years of age or older, including:
- Conducting comprehensive psychiatric assessments and patient admissions
- Creating treatment plans including medication management
- Obtaining and reviewing appropriate laboratory tests and consulting with members of the treatment team as needed
- Providing individual and group psychotherapy
- Supervising Psychiatric Residents and Fellows
Candidates from outside or within State Service can be considered for hire under the Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement – Statewide (HELPS) program if they have:
- Psychiatrist 1:
License and current registration to practice medicine in New York State, and completion of a training program in psychiatry approved by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). - Psychiatrist 2:
License and current registration to practice medicine in New York State, and certification in psychiatry approved by the ABPN.
OR
Candidates from within State Service can be considered for a competitive class appointment if they have one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service in a title eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.
Additional commentsPsychiatrists at OMH facilities are eligible for:
- Psychiatrist Loan Repayment Program offering up to $120,000
- Supplemental income of up to 50% of salary by volunteering to provide evening, night, and weekend coverage

This position is eligible for a Downstate Adjustment of $4,000.
SalaryPSYCHIATRIST 1: $270,356
PSYCHIATRIST 2: $283,577

If you are appointed and you lose the ability to bill through Medicare and Medicaid, you may be terminated from your employment.
- License and Certification:
Loss of license or limited permit to practice medicine in New York State or board certification, if required, may result in removal from your position.
