Job Summary:

The New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) is seeking a qualified and experienced Board-Certified Psychiatrist to provide comprehensive psychiatric services in inpatient, outpatient, adult, child/adolescent, and/or forensic settings. This role involves evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, medication management, and coordination of care for individuals with psychiatric disorders. This is a Locum Tenens (independent contractor) role requiring strong clinical expertise, professionalism, and the ability to integrate effectively with interdisciplinary treatment teams.

Minimum Requirements
  • Must be enrolled in CMS and remain an unconditional Medicare/Medicaid participating provider (OPRA-compliant).
  • Board-certified in Adult Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). If primarily serving youth, must be board-certified in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.
  • Minimum 3 years of post-residency clinical psychiatry experience.
  • Must be enrolled with NYS Medicaid as a Billing Provider or ORA Prescriber.
  • Must enroll in NYS I-STOP/PMP (Prescription Monitoring Program).
  • If required, must obtain and maintain hospital privileges at non-OMH state facilities and cover any related fees.
  • Must assign all insurance reimbursement for OMH patient care to OMH.
  • Must maintain an active NY State medical license in good standing and notify OMH of any changes.
  • Must meet all credentialing and privileging requirements per Joint Commission and OMH regulations.
  • Must be able to perform the majority of clinical duties with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide safe, humane, and ethical psychiatric care to all clients.
  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, physical exams (when required), and diagnostic assessments.
  • Review medical history, previous examinations, psychiatric evaluations, and test results.
  • Diagnose psychiatric conditions and formulate treatment plans and multi-modal therapy programs.
  • Prescribe medications and monitor treatment effectiveness.
  • Conduct individual and group therapy sessions.
  • Order laboratory and diagnostic tests as needed.
  • Evaluate patients for admission, transfer, or discharge.
  • Collaborate with treatment teams, caregivers, families, and external providers.
  • Prepare accurate clinical documentation, case histories, progress notes, and discharge summaries.
  • Attend clinical staff meetings and participate in medical committees.
  • Ensure all documentation meets OMH, Joint Commission, and regulatory standards.
Program & Team Responsibilities
  • Integrate into multidisciplinary treatment teams and collaborate across all staff levels.
  • Participate in treatment planning, updates, and reviews.
  • Coordinate services to ensure continuity of care during transitions or community placement.
  • Provide Physician On Duty (POD) coverage when assigned.
  • Follow all OMH site-specific policies (safety, security, identification, training, etc.).
  • Use OMH-designated systems for documentation and electronic medical records.

    • Provide comprehensive psychiatric evaluation and treatment for individuals under 18.
    • Conduct family/group therapy and education.
    • Order suicide precautions and medical triage when needed.
    • Provide behavioral, cognitive, supportive, and insight-oriented therapy.
  • Adult Psychiatry
    • Evaluate and treat individuals 18+.
    • Conduct lethality assessments, forensic evaluations, and medical triage when needed.
    • Implement suicide precautions, restraint, and seclusion protocols when required.
  • Adult Forensic Psychiatry
    • Provide psychiatric services to justice-involved individuals, including those deemed incompetent to stand trial, NGRI, or requiring secure treatment.
    • Conduct forensic evaluations, suicide assessments, and provide telepsychiatry services if needed.
    • No prior forensic training required—OMH provides clinical supervision.
Additional Requirements
  • Must comply with all OMH workplace, immunization, and health screening policies (PPD, chest X-ray if required, MMR, flu, etc.).
