Medical Specialist

Description

As a Medical Specialist, you will diagnose, treat patients, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide specialized care. You serve as a senior practicing specialist within your recognized medical discipline.

• Assist in development or revision of medical policy and procedures to ensure quality care.
• Review lab work, specialty consults, hospital discharges, medical visit summaries, and diagnostic reports for group home RN and treatment team.
• Discuss care with hospital or rehabilitation providers to share clinical information and ensure continuity of care.
• Review and approve discharge summaries before accepting an individual into the group home residence.
• Review medical information for new admissions to a residence to ensure appropriate care.
• Communicate with team members regarding medical issues and participate in team meetings one or more times per week.
• Communicate with family members and advocates when needed to explain medical or treatment issues.
• Provide short‑term urgently needed prescription renewals when a community medical provider may be unavailable.
• Serve as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team, attend meetings, and serve on committees and work groups to improve services.

• Provide after‑hours and weekend on‑call medical telephone consult on a rotating basis.
• Provide primary medical care coverage for patients in a Comprehensive Adult Transitional Home when the assigned provider is absent.
• Provide medical expertise to Family Care Program and Community Mental Health Nurses as needed.
• Assist with physician coverage in sister regions when required.

Possession of a license to practice medicine in New York State and certification by a Member Board of the American Board of Medical Specialties in your specialty. Must not be listed on any federal or state Medicaid and Medicare exclusion lists.

You may need to become an enrolled Medicare provider, obtain a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number, and maintain licensure and board certification. Eligibility to hold a limited permit is allowed, but a full license or limited permit must be obtained within one year of appointment.

This title is part of the NY HELPS program, where appointments may be non‑competitive. Within one year of permanent appointment, conversion to competitive status is expected. The position may be open to OPWDD employees affected by closures and to candidates eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
