Summary

The New York Harbor VAMC – St. Albans Campus is recruiting for a full‑time Associate Chief of Staff (ACOS) for Geriatrics and Extended Care (CLC). The ACOS is accountable to the Executive Chief of Staff for the organization and delivery of intermediate inpatient and outpatient medical care provided at the ECC and its outpatient clinics. This position may be eligible for a sign‑on bonus for highly qualified candidates.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below and, if applicable, any additional requirements in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic

Requirements
  • United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy)
  • Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States – or in the District of Columbia
  • Residency training:
    Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
  • Approved residencies include: ACGME‑accredited programs; AOA‑accredited programs; or other residencies (non‑US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States) as deemed sufficient by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee
  • Residency applicants currently enrolled in an ACGME/AOA‑accredited program are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) if they otherwise meet the basic requirements
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English
  • Preferred experience:

    Board certification or eligibility in the specialty/sub‑specialty indicated in the announcement

Duties
  • The VA New York Harbor Healthcare System provides care to eligible veterans via three medical centers and two community‑based outpatient clinics
  • The Margaret Cochran VA Campus is a high‑complexity facility located in Manhattan with a major educational affiliation with the NYU Grossman School of Medicine
  • The Brooklyn Campus provides acute inpatient medical and surgical services with a major affiliation with SUNY‑Health Science Center – Brooklyn
  • The St. Albans Campus houses a community living center as well as outpatient services
  • Manages the ECC’s educational and performance‑improvement activities, integrating them with the delivery of medical care and the facility’s mission, vision, and strategic plans
  • Supports the alignment of extended‑care services with the facility’s mission, vision, and strategic plan
  • Integrates medical care with other services and programs within and outside the ECC
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures to provide guidance and ensure coordination of care
  • Directs and supervises the activities of the ECC – including both inpatient and outpatient services
