Responsibilities

Conducts dental screenings, examines teeth, gums, and related tissues to determine condition, using dental instruments, x-ray, and other diagnostic equipment;

Diagnoses, and treats or refers for treatment of, oral disease conditions;

Provides basic restorative care that includes: filling caries; and extracting and replacing teeth, using rotary and hand instruments, dental appliances, medications, and surgical implements;

Applies fluoride and sealants to teeth;

Treats exposure of pulp by pulp capping, removal of pulp from pulp chamber, or root canal, using dental instruments;

Treats infected root canal and related tissues;

Fills pulp chamber and canal with endodontic materials;

Eliminates irritating margins of fillings and corrects occlusions, using dental instruments;

Formulates plan of treatment for patient's teeth and mouth tissue;

Removes pathologic tissue or diseased tissue using surgical instruments;

Restores natural color of teeth by bleaching, cleaning, and polishing;

Analyzes and evaluates dental needs to determine changes and trends in patterns of dental disease;

Counsels and advises patients about growth and development of dental problems; provides information or consultation to promote or facilitate oral health or prevent onset or worsening of oral health disorders;

Fabricates prosthodontic appliances, such as space maintainers, bridges, dentures, and obturating appliances;

Fits and adjusts prosthodontic appliances in the patient's mouth;

Produces and evaluates dental health educational materials;

Plans, organizes, and maintains dental health programs;

Provides emergency care and treatment as necessary;

Documents complete information in dental records;

Participates as a member of the medical staff and adheres to the medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations;

Consultant to others and be expected to request consultation when: a) diagnosis and/or management remain in doubt over an unduly long period of time, especially in the presence of a life-threatening illness; b) unexpected complications arise which are outside this level of competence; c) specialized treatment or procedures are

The medical outpatient program serves both community and special populations. The health center has primary, dentistry, behavioral health (psychiatry/social work), health home capabilities, and podiatry to facilitate supportive referrals within the same location.
