We are seeking a Media Relations Manager who has a strong track record of securing placements in a wide range of media outlets (print, broadcast, wire services, podcasts, newsletters). This role is ideal for a media professional who thrives on building relationships with journalists, is creative and persistent when it comes to landing coverage, works well under pressure, and has a knack for synthesizing technical information into accessible, newsworthy narratives.
This role will involve driving media strategies across GHS’s client portfolio, working in partnership with a global team and reporting into a Vice President based in the US. Strong writing skills are essential; experience working in global health and with media outside the US is a plus.
This role is based in New York City, with an expectation of 3 days per week in the office.
About The PositionThe Media Relations Manager will play a significant role in GHS’ growing media practice. It is highly execution-focused, with responsibility for identifying and tracking reporters, building relationships, pitching stories on behalf of clients and proactively proposing ideas on angles and strategy.
Key Responsibilities- Strategy:
Advise internal teams and clients on proactive and reactive media strategies, including on how to effectively engage journalists, columnists and editors across a wide range of beats and subject areas. Must have a sharp eye for the moments and angles most likely to break through. - Media Intelligence:
Maintain a deep, current understanding of evolving media landscapes, including beat shifts and emerging editorial priorities across a range of outlets (print, broadcast, wire services, podcasts, newsletters). Use and advise on essential tools to strengthen media relations (e.g., media databases, monitoring resources). Monitor real-time news cycles to identify timely opportunities for proactive outreach and to position clients. - Relationships:
Proactively reach out to journalists and editors to build and maintain relationships, ensuring a strong understanding of their interests and priorities for coverage. Pitch story ideas to contacts and share journalist insights with teams and clients to maximize the chances of strong coverage. - Paid Media:
Conduct ongoing research into paid and sponsored media opportunities — including branded content, newsletter sponsor ships, and media events — and provide thoughtful recommendations on how these can complement earned media strategies. - Pitch & Placement:
Lead the development and distribution of compelling, well-crafted media materials — including pitches, press releases, media advisories, and op-eds — that are tightly aligned with client goals and tailored to the interests of target journalists. - Coverage Analysis:
Systematically track media placements and assess coverage quality across outlets, formats, and reporters. Provide insights — identifying what's resonating, what's missing, and how messaging or targeting should evolve — and translate those findings into concrete adjustments to pitching strategy. - Spokesperson & Media Training Support:
Partner with internal teams and clients to prepare spokespeople for media interactions, including developing talking points, anticipating likely lines of questioning, and supporting prep sessions ahead of interviews or high-profile announcements. - Crisis & Issues Management:
Support rapid response efforts during sensitive or high-stakes situations, helping to develop proactive and reactive messaging, coordinate media responses, and protect client reputation. - New Business:
Contribute to new business proposals by bringing media expertise to pitches, helping to propose creative media tactics, and demonstrating knowledge of the competitive media landscape.
- 5-6 years of overall experience with strong expertise in media relations, including a track record of media placements and relationships with reporters.
- Bachelor's degree; degree in Communications or Journalism a plus.
- Demonstrated excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to simplify complex topics for public audiences.
