United Nations Bureau Chief
Reuters is seeking an exceptional United Nations Bureau Chief to report on the U.N. from its New York headquarters. The United Nations and global diplomacy face profound challenges, including a looming funding crisis at the UN and a U.S. president whose foreign policy is accelerating the break‑up of the post‑World War Two order.
The U.N.'s central role in world affairs provides a rare sourcing opportunity for an ambitious journalist to cover topics ranging from Ukraine and Gaza to China and North Korea. Reporting to the Washington‑based foreign policy editor, the successful candidate will develop sources, break news, and produce a body of work that shows how diplomacy—and key bilateral and multilateral relations among countries—are changing.
AboutThe Role
As our UN Bureau Chief you will:
- Break news from sources at the UN
- Generate original, ambitious story ideas for enterprise reporting on the UN and global diplomacy
- Collaborate closely with the foreign policy team and Reuters colleagues worldwide to confirm tips
- Cover the most important events at the U.N., including General Assembly work, and focus on original stories that set Reuters apart
- Deputize on occasion for the Foreign Policy Editor
You’re a fit if you have:
- At least 7 years’ experience as a reporter
- A keen interest in foreign policy and national security issues
- Sources across the diplomatic community and among U.S. allies
- A proven track record in breaking source‑based news, producing deeply reported enterprise stories, and writing compelling, clean copy
- Experience managing or coordinating team coverage (a plus)
