Job Description

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a Deputy Editor to join its Live Journalism team based in New York. This senior role requires strategic editorial leadership and production expertise to shape WSJ’s live journalism programming, including conferences like Tech Live and The Future of Everything, as well as the Journal’s presence at summits such as the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Responsibilities
  • Shape content strategy and editorial direction for WSJ’s live journalism programming, including conferences, live podcast tapings, reader meetups and other experiences.
  • Set editorial priorities and ensure programming aligns with WSJ’s journalistic standards and audience interests.
  • Collaborate with newsroom leadership and desks across the organization to identify topics and journalists that should be elevated at our live journalism events.
  • Provide editorial guidance and mentorship to a team of producers and journalists.
Production Oversight & Multimedia Expertise
  • Oversee the identification and pitching of a diverse, engaging slate of interview subjects for events, video, audio, and other platforms.
  • Work with a team of journalists responsible for sourcing and booking news-making interviews with news makers, CEOs, and industry leaders.
  • Leverage video and audio production expertise to shape compelling content across formats.
  • Conduct or oversee pre-interviews and research, and ensure thoughtful preparation of questions.
  • Handle talent representatives as well as production partners, making assertive editorial and production decisions under tight deadlines.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with commercial‑side colleagues on marketing, sales and logistics to execute successful events and programming.
  • Partner with video, audio, social and audience teams to maximize reach and impact of live journalism.
  • Coordinate with reporters and editors across coverage areas to identify and produce impactful interviews.
  • Serve as a liaison between editorial and business teams while maintaining journalistic independence.
Operational Excellence
  • Manage multiple projects at various stages of production across formats (live events, video, podcasts).
  • Maintain a strategic pipeline of programming that balances breaking news and long‑term editorial goals.
  • Ensure all journalistic and legal standards are followed at all times.
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends as news developments and event schedules may warrant.
Requirements
  • 7+ years of experience in news media with significant editorial leadership experience.
  • Strong supervising producer background with demonstrated expertise in video and audio production.
  • Proven track record working with or managing teams that book and produce content with high‑profile subjects such as CEOs, news makers, and industry leaders, preferably at a top‑tier news organization.
  • Deep understanding of the production process for live events, video projects and podcasts.
  • Strong strategic thinking and content planning abilities.
  • Experience collaborating with commercial teams on events or programming while maintaining editorial integrity.
  • Exceptional communication, writing and editorial skills with careful attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational time‑management skills with ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Team player who has ease working with senior leadership, talent, freelancers and cross‑functional partners.
  • Deep understanding of and interest in The Wall Street Journal’s core topic areas.
  • Comfort working across multiple platforms and formats with strong multimedia storytelling instincts.
