Description This American Life is looking for an experienced audio professional to engineer and mix high quality, narrative audio stories. The ideal candidate will be collaborative, creative, and detail-oriented with a strong background in audio storytelling.
This American Life is a home for narrative reporting. Our stories are organized around plot, with emotional arcs, strong central characters, surprising twists, funny moments, and original ideas. This American Life has been on the air since 1995, has won every major award for journalistic excellence, and is hugely popular, with 3 million radio listeners and podcast downloads each week.
We believe that having a diverse staff is the only way to effectively document the reality of life in this country with the proper nuance and perspective. A more diverse group of people working behind the scenes makes us better at every stage of our processes. So we strongly encourage people of all backgrounds, races, genders, and abilities to apply.
** Some things you’ll do in this role:
*** Mix and score stories for This American Life. Mixers are responsible for all aspects of audio production -- levels, musical scoring, audio restoration, and mastering.
* Assist with weekly show production. Along with the rest of the audio team, you’ll be responsible for meeting deadlines for weekly show releases each Friday.
* Work with the Director of Audio Production to source and supervise creation of original music for the show.
* Provide technical support to the This American Life team. This includes support for recording both in and outside the studio and assistance with Pro Tools and other audio software.
** Some things we’re looking for:
*** 5+ years of experience in audio engineering (or equivalent position). We are open to audio professionals from any discipline who have experience using audio to tell stories.
* Expert in Pro Tools with experience in audio restoration (iZotope RX) and mixing/mastering for publication.
* Expertise in recording techniques and equipment, both for studio settings and field recording.
* Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and follow through on projects to completion.
* Excellent attention to detail, with good organization and time management skills.
* Collaborative attitude and strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical information to people with technical and non-technical backgrounds.
This is an in-person position based out of the This American Life offices in New York City. Remote employees (US only) will be considered; however, because this position is expected to provide in-studio support, a strong preference will be given to candidates who are based in New York.
This role is full time and reports to our Director of Audio Production.
