The New York Times is looking for a recipe editor to join NYT Cooking, our fast‑growing, industry‑leading recipe product, which has more than a million subscribers and approximately 22,000 recipes. In this role, you will focus on editing recipes that come from a wide range of cuisines, with an emphasis on line editing recipe headnotes and other related cooking editorial copy, and help with the overall recipe workflow.

You have strong line editing skills, great communication skills and culinary knowledge as well. You are an expert on cooking, specifically how recipes are written and framed. You will also be able to work well on a highly collaborative team, manage time, stay organized, pay very close attention to details, meet deadlines and work efficiently in our publishing system.

This is an in‑office position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities
  • Edit recipes and headnotes for a wide range of dishes from different cuisines for framing, style, tone, accuracy, clarity, context and New York Times style.
  • Work with assigning editors to ensure that the recipes submitted match the assignment.
  • Work with fellow editors, recipe developers, testers and reporters to produce outstanding recipes that meet our goals.
  • Help organize and keep track of recipes in Air Table, our CMS and other docs, spreadsheets and budgets throughout the entire workflow.
  • Gather recipes into collections on NYT Cooking, and update those collections on an ongoing basis.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Senior Editor, Cooking.
Basic Qualifications

Minimum 8 years of experience as an editor, preferably for a culinary publication.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Superb editorial judgment and attention to detail. You should be meticulous in your work. Copy‑editing experience is a strong plus.
  • Experience in working with creative culinary professionals to ensure that writing is clear and compelling.
  • Strong digital skills and the ability to quickly learn the ins and outs of our CMS and other platforms.
  • Flexibility and willingness to pitch in when needed on various tasks to accomplish shared and evolving goals.
  • A commitment to the team and working in a collaborative environment.
  • A passion for cooking and the mission of The New York Times.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $ - $115,000 USD.

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
