The Wall Street Journal is seeking a reporter on its Features & WSJ. Magazine team to write consumer-facing book and literary‑world features, report lively and prescient trend stories, and produce shareable feature stories focused on authors, books and readership for a general consumer audience. Modern media is rapidly transforming publishing, changing how readers engage with books and their authors. The ideal candidate is a high‑metabolism feature reporter with a zeal for distinctive, character‑driven angles on the biggest literary and book‑world industry stories, an eye for personalities and cultural forces shaping the medium, and knowledge of writers, sellers and #Book Tok crusaders.
YouWill
- Report, write and fact‑check an average of four stories per month about books, literary trends, authors and key players in the book world.
- Produce highly shareable, witty, adrenaline‑filled story ideas with clear news value and elegant, thoughtful execution.
- Leverage a well‑developed roster of industry contacts and knowledge of key figures and sources to secure scoops, spot trends and develop features.
- Modulate between tough, detail‑driven enterprise stories and whimsical, frisky features that mine for joy and humor, embodying the Features and WSJ. Magazine mission to inform and entertain.
- Collaborate egolessly with senior feature storytellers, enterprise and business teams, and the Media bureau focused on the corporate business‑side stories reshaping books.
- Uncover untold stories, develop them into juicy features and engaging reads, and amplify traditional author or trend profiles with humanizing detail and a strong eye for shareable, well‑crafted narrative with potential for long‑form WSJ. Magazine inclusion.
- Embrace audience data, learning and continue to fuse metrics with taste and imaginative ideas.
- Ensure the voice, tone and standards of The Wall Street Journal are consistently met; guarantee stories are accurate, fair, objective and of impeccable quality while upholding newsroom ethics and conduct policies.
- Unputdownable clips and exceptional writing and reporting skills.
- 4 to 8 years of experience covering a relevant beat, including news, reported feature stories, and well‑developed enterprise or long‑form feature storytelling.
- A proven record of finding unexpected takes on fast‑moving news events and an eye for book‑world stories that appeal to a general audience.
- A sense of humor and a history of finding clever, intelligent angles into widely covered stories.
- A meticulous approach to fact‑checking that minimizes corrections and bulletproofs stories with close attention to detail.
- A sharp sense of how to connect with digital audiences.
- Visual thinking and a vested interest in how stories appear and present across platforms.
- A collaborative, team‑player attitude, upbeat outlook and entrepreneurial spirit as coverage needs grow and evolve.
You will report to the Bureau Chief of Entertainment & Arts within the Features team. This is a full‑time position based in our New York office.
