Job SummaryThe Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, competitive, and detailed cost estimates for architectural metal projects. This entry-level role is ideal for individuals interested in building a career in construction estimating. This position reviews request proposals, drawings, and specifications to define the applicable scope of work. From that scope you will be responsible for preparing quantity takeoffs, and assisting with the production of costs for labor, materials, equipment rentals, and overhead.
This position also contributes to thinking through all means and methods required to execute the potential opportunity in conjunction with our larger estimating and preconstruction teams. This role is an excellent opportunity to gain industry experience and develop key skills in projects estimating under the guidance of experienced professionals.
- Assist with Cost Estimation: Support the Estimator team in preparing cost estimates for architectural metal projects, including labor, materials, and equipment.
- Basic Takeoffs & Measurements: Perform quantity takeoffs and assist in calculating material and labor needs for projects from provided architectural and engineering drawings and specifications. Ensure accuracy in measurements and data collection.
- Research material, labor, and equipment costs: Research costs and compile updated pricing from vendors and suppliers to ensure estimates are current.
- Bid Preparation Support: Assist in the preparation of bid documents, ensuring that all project requirements and costs are documented and organized for submission.
- Collaborate with other estimators, preconstruction team, shop leads, project managers, engineers, and other team members as applicable to gather project data, ensuring we have a clearly defined scope, accurate quantities, and well thought out means and methods that will fulfill the request for proposal on time and with profitability.
- Support the team by obtaining vendor and supplier quotes and developing relationships with key suppliers.
- Aid the team in assessing project risks by reviewing specifications and market trends, contributing to strategies to mitigate costs and maximize efficiency.
- Documentation & Data Management: Keep detailed records of all data used to back up and support cost estimates. This includes but is not limited to calculations, measurements, and notes, ensuring all data is organized and accessible for future reference.
- Cost Comparison Reports: Support the Chief Estimator in compiling reports comparing different cost scenarios. Assist in presenting findings to project teams and management.
- Post-Award Review: Assist in reviewing estimates after project award to ensure alignment with actual costs and track any variances for future improvement.
- Market Trends: Stay updated on industry developments, material costs, and labor rates to support the preparation of accurate and competitive estimates.
- Professional Development: Actively participate in training sessions and development opportunities to improve estimating skills, software proficiency, and cost analysis techniques.
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Historic Preservation or a related field (preferred).
- 0-2 years of experience in estimating, construction, or related roles, ideally within the architectural metalwork or construction industry.
