Compensation$104000 - $139000 / year
Position SummaryThe Civil Field Engineer provides day-to-day technical and field support to ensure construction activities are executed in accordance with contract documents, drawings, specifications, and safety requirements. This role bridges engineering, field operations, and project controls in a live railroad environment.
This position is non‑union at this time. The company may review union status in the future based on business needs and employee preference, consistent with legal and contractual obligations.
Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties Field Engineering & Construction Support- Support field execution of civil and structural work including concrete, excavation, utilities, foundations, retaining structures, and site work.
- Assist with layout, survey coordination, and verification of dimensions and elevations.
- Review drawings, specifications, and work plans to support constructability and sequencing.
- Coordinate with Superintendents and foremen to resolve field issues.
- Assist with inspection and quality control activities to ensure work conforms to contract requirements.
- Track and maintain daily reports, quantities installed, and field documentation.
- Support preparation and tracking of RFIs, submittals, and as‑built documentation.
- Coordinate work activities with subcontractors and internal crews.
- Interface with other disciplines including track, signal, power, and third‑party stakeholders as required.
- Support work performed within active railroad rights‑of‑way and constrained work windows.
- Support enforcement of Rail Works and agency safety rules, railroad operating procedures, and site‑specific safety plans.
- Participate in safety briefings and job hazard analyses.
Skills and Qualifications Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
- 2‑5 years of experience in civil or heavy construction (rail/transit experience preferred).
- Strong understanding of civil construction fundamentals and field operations.
- Ability to read and interpret civil, structural, and utility drawings.
- Willingness to work in active railroad environments, including nights, weekends, and outage windows as required.
- Track or railroad construction exposure is a plus but not required.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with field management software a plus.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem‑solving skills.
- Works outdoors at construction sites and indoors
- Likely works off‑hours and weekends to match construction schedules.
- Frequently stands, walks, climbs, balances, stoops, and crouches while negotiating work areas under construction
- Sits, reads, writes, and uses a keyboard
- May be exposed to harsh weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather
- May be exposed to loud noise.
