Overview
Basic Job Functions Lead a group of up to 18 children in after camp activities (3-5pm, 5-6pm) with opportunities to explore the New York Botanical Garden grounds and outdoor classroom experiences (weather dependent). Establish a fun and engaging environment for after campers from Science Camp and Edible Academy Camp to learn and play together. Develop and lead active, hands-on science and nature games and activities, and collaborate with camp staff to lead activities throughout the NYBG landscape.
Supervise and mentor 2 Camp Assistants (college students) on daily responsibilities and duties.
- Assist Camp staff at Nature/Science Camp with activities/recess to get to know campers during their camp day
- Plan and coordinate daily and weekly after-camp program and schedule, including independently planning and implementing science/nature-based activities for the after campers
- Support Explainers in helping campers with daily tasks; e.g., track personal items, participate in large and small group activities, and escort small groups of students to the restroom
- Build strong relationships with campers and Camp staff
- Supervise safe and orderly pick-up at end of After Camp
- Maintain close communication with Camp staff to mitigate behavioral and scheduling issues
- Outgoing and friendly personality with excellent oral communication skills
- Experience teaching outdoors with large groups of children with varied learning needs; relevant student age group experience based on position
- Responsible, punctual, professional, motivated, self-starter and able to mentor others
- Background in science, education and/or museum studies
- Experience teaching hands-on, inquiry-based lessons with live plants and living organisms
- Foreign language is helpful but not essential
- Must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather
- Commit to orientation/training, June 22-July 2, 2026, 9am-5pm and leading 3-6 weeks of after camp July 6-July 24, 2026 (entering grades Pre-K-6th) and/or August 3-August 21, 2026 (entering grades Pre-K-8th); 10am-6pm schedule
- $25.75 Per Hour
