Position: Administrative Apprentice, Historical Performance
Location: New York

Description

This is a part-time position for someone interested in pursuing a career in classical music administration. The apprentice will be immersed in all aspects of the Historical Performance program at Juilliard, including scheduling, artist services, space allocation, chamber music and orchestral concert production, ensemble management and operations, and day-to-day office functions. The department has four full-time staff members, and 15 regular and visiting faculty members.

The salary is $18.50 per hour for 40 weeks, or a contracted amount of $14,800.00 for the school year.

About Historical Performance

Juilliard Historical Performance, founded in 2009, is a graduate program for outstanding musicians who want to specialize in playing early music on period instruments. Every student accepted into the two-year Master’s or Graduate Diploma program receives a full-tuition scholarship.

About the Professional Apprentice Program

This program provides immersive training for emerging performing arts technicians and administrators, addressing the need for practical training in the field. For over four decades, it has prepared recent graduates, early‑career professionals, and individuals undergoing career transitions for employment in the cultural sector. This is achieved through hands‑on experience, professional development, and networking and mentorship opportunities.

Role Responsibilities
  • Under the guidance of HP staff, assist with the department’s daily administrative operations and performance activities. Specific assignments are catered to the Apprentice’s interests, as well as the needs of the department.
  • Support day‑of management of assigned projects (i.e. masterclasses, concerts, events).
  • Support the Program Coordinator with creating schedules for faculty, students, and guest artists during the school year as assigned.
  • Interact with all of HP’s constituents including students, faculty, staff, guest artists, directors, and conductors throughout the year.
  • Gather and edit program materials for assigned concerts and recitals as applicable.
  • Assist with additional HP activities and administration.
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree, or related professional experience and transferable skills, or a combination of both.
  • Willingness to work in person, in a busy office environment.
  • Ability to interact and communicate well with people of various backgrounds, adapting with ease.
  • Desire to assess, prioritize, and find creative solutions when problem‑solving.
  • Discretion, integrity, and calm under potentially stressful circumstances.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a very busy environment.
  • Detail‑oriented.
  • Must be able to read a music score.
Preferred Background
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook.
  • A strong interest in arts administration.
  • A working knowledge of classical music in general, and early music in particular, is a plus.
