Controller, Accounting, Accounting Manager

Overview

Atrium is seeking on behalf of our client a Controller (Hybrid – New York).

Our client, a growing service‑based firm with complex time‑based billing operations, is looking for a hands‑on Controller who can own the full accounting function from A–Z. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast‑paced environment, understands end‑to‑end billing workflows, and is comfortable rolling up their sleeves while also supporting leadership with accurate financial reporting and operational insight.

• Oversee daily accounting operations including billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, and month‑end close.
• Lead and manage the monthly close process to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with GAAP.
• Review and approve client billing for accuracy, completeness, and alignment with contract terms.
• Partner with Project Managers to support monthly billing reviews and resolve billing‑related issues.
• Oversee collections efforts and guide resolution of past‑due accounts.
• Manage and reconcile transactional, project, and resource management data to support billing and reporting.
• Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff; review work for accuracy and completeness.
• Support project‑related contract management including change orders, amendments, and close‑out procedures.
• Prepare and review financial statements, variance analyses, and ad‑hoc reporting for leadership.
• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
• Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, scalability, and internal controls.
• Support audits and collaborate with external partners as needed.
• Ensure compliance with accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls across the organization.

• Active CPA license.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• 8–15 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within a service‑based environment that bills time.
• Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior‑level accounting leader.
• Strong understanding of end‑to‑end billing workflows for time‑based services (must‑have).

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
