Controller, Accounting, Accounting Manager

Overview

We are a New York City–based engineering firm seeking a hands-on Controller with deep experience in billing and client billing within a professional services environment. This role is responsible for overseeing all accounting functions, with a strong emphasis on accurate, timely client invoicing, WIP management, and revenue recognition.

The ideal candidate is a CPA who understands how billing drives cash flow, client relationships, and overall firm performance and is comfortable partnering closely with project managers and leadership to ensure financial discipline across the organization.

• Own the end-to-end client billing process, including time and materials, milestone-based, and fixed-fee engagements
• Oversee WIP, unbilled revenue, deferred revenue, and backlog reporting
• Ensure accurate revenue recognition in accordance with GAAP for project-based work
• Partner with project managers to review billing schedules, contract terms, and project profitability
• Monitor AR, manage collections strategy, and reduce billing delays and aged receivables
• Serve as the primary escalation point for client billing questions and disputes
• Lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process
• Prepare and review financial statements and management reporting
• Maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures
• Manage audit, tax, and CPA firm relationships
• Develop and monitor budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections
• Identify opportunities to improve billing efficiency, accuracy, and automation
• Improve and streamline billing and accounting processes without adding unnecessary complexity
• Evaluate and optimize accounting and project billing systems
• Mentor and support junior accounting or billing staff as applicable

• Active CPA license
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
• 10 to 15 years of total accounting experience
• Significant experience overseeing client billing in engineering, architecture, construction, or professional services
• Strong understanding of project accounting, WIP, and revenue recognition
• Proven ability to partner with project managers and client-facing teams
• Advanced Excel skills and experience with project-based accounting systems
• Detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable in a hands-on environment
