Through direct support of sound research initiatives, the Research Assistant will play a key role in advancing innovative approaches to 3D sound composition and strengthening the university's connections with other research institutions. This position contributes meaningfully to the university's legacy, founded in 1919 by forward-thinking educators, by supporting experimental, interdisciplinary research and advancing innovative work in spatial sound and contemporary composition.

The Research Assistant will support faculty-led sound research projects focused on composing and realizing 3D, ambisonics, and spatial audio environments. This position involves research and creative production across sound-based formats, including art installations, live performances, and virtual environments. Projects focus on techniques such as multichannel recording, 3D sound placement, and sound synthesis to explore new compositional strategies across a variety of platforms.

The Research Assistant will report to the supervising faculty member.

* Support research development and technical implementation by assisting with experimental design and implementing patches and workflows using audio programming environments to advance ongoing research projects.

* Configure and operate audio recording and sound synthesis systems by setting up microphones, interfaces, loudspeaker arrays, and software environments to capture, generate, and evaluate spatial audio materials during research sessions.

* Prepare, move, and maintain audio equipment and materials by assembling physical setups, labeling and organizing components, and ensuring systems function reliably.
• Develop and manage physical and digital research materials by creating session documentation, organizing data files, maintaining versioned project assets, and preparing materials for internal review and external collaboration.

* Document research processes and outcomes by recording technical configurations, writing clear procedural notes, and assisting with the preparation of reports, presentations, and archival materials to support knowledge sharing.

* Perform administrative and logistical support tasks as needed by scheduling sessions, tracking equipment use, and assisting with routine operational activities to ensure smooth execution of research projects.

Workmode:
Hybrid/Split - Employees hired for this position have regularly scheduled, consistent percentage of time on campus (1day a week) and work some of the time remotely.

Hourly Rate:

$31.37

Minimum Qualifications:

* Demonstrated proficiency in MAX/MSP by developing, modifying, and troubleshooting patches for sound synthesis, signal processing, and spatial audio applications.
• Knowledge of spatial audio concepts by understanding multichannel audio systems, spatialization techniques, with an interest in emerging audio formats.

* Strong attention to detail and organizational skills by accurately documenting technical setups, managing digital files, and preparing physical and digital research materials.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Education and knowledge in sound art, music technology, audio engineering, or a closely related field, demonstrated through coursework, academic projects, or equivalent training.
• Availability to work flexible hours occasionally by supporting recording sessions, installations, or research activities that may occur outside of regular business hours.
