The Dalton School, a progressive K-12 gender-inclusive school in Manhattan's Upper East Side, is consistently recognized as one of the preeminent independent day schools in the nation. Known for its child-centered approach and an exceptional, inspiring faculty, Dalton enrolls over 1,300 students with approximately 350 faculty and staff. Guided by the Dalton Plan, the foundation of a Dalton education, our faculty meets each student's evolving needs, interests, and abilities.
Dalton challenges each student to develop intellectual independence, creativity, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility toward others both within the School and in the broader community.
We are seeking a high school Math teacher for the 2026-27 school year. Math at Dalton emphasizes open-ended problem solving. We seek to cultivate an appreciation for mathematical rigor and a joy in finding creative solutions to problems. Much of our curriculum has been developed and iterated on through collaboration and teamwork. We are a collegial and engaged department committed to ensuring our colleagues' and students' sense of belonging in our classrooms and all spaces at Dalton.
Our ideal candidate is a passionate teacher with deep mathematical knowledge who enjoys working with high school students. In particular, we are seeking a candidate prepared to teach all levels of high school math including Algebra 2, Geometry with proofs, Precalculus, and Calculus. Familiarity with Linear Algebra, Multi-variable Calculus, and other courses beyond the typical high school curriculum is highly preferred.
In your cover letter, please highlight any experience teaching these topics or related courses, and address how you build community and encourage collaboration between your students.
Responsibilities:
- Teach four courses; collaborate regularly and closely with each course's teaching team.
- Serve as a co-House Advisor to a group of mixed-grade high school students.
- Work with existing lesson plans and curriculum to design engaging lessons; over time, collaborate with colleagues to develop original curricula.
- Work one-on-one with students daily for support and enrichment.
- Write narrative reports describing student progress.
- Engage actively in departmental and school-wide programming and initiatives.
- Bachelor's degree in math or related field required; graduate degree preferred.
- Minimum of three years of high school math teaching experience required.
- Strong understanding of student learning, differentiation, and educational technology.
- Demonstrated commitment to inclusive practices with respect to pedagogy, curriculum, and community engagement.
- Excitement for continued professional growth.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
