POSITION/ROLE OVERVIEW

The College of Performing Arts at The New School is seeking a highly qualified Seasonal Lead Carpenter to join its Performance Operations - Scenic Department Staff. The Scenic Department is responsible for the creation, alteration, and sourcing of all scenery for productions in the Mannes School of Music, School of Jazz and Contemporary Music, and School of Drama. The Seasonal Lead Carpenter is delegated as needed to work on builds, alterations, storage pulls, and/or shopping runs.

The Seasonal Lead Carpenter is a qualified and organized collaborator who can follow instructions, work independently, and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced, and highly team-oriented environment. The Seasonal Lead Carpenter reports to the Production Shops Manager.

This is a FLSA non-exempt seasonal position (on average, 30 hours per week), with work calls beginning mid - January 2026 through May 15, 2026. This time period would include a minimum of 30 hours per week.

CORE CAPABILITIES, PRIMARY DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Oversee the completion of Overhire Carpenters' and Overhire Scenic Artists' daily tasks assigned by the Production Shops Manager

* Meet with the Production Shops Manager weekly to ensure timely completion of to-do lists for all project-related builds

* Review season calendar with Production Shops Manager to strategically allocate overhire personnel resources during high-volume event periods

* Act as the designated Scenic Department representative during technical rehearsals and events

* Assist in general organization and cleanliness of all onsite and offsite storage

* Collaborate with Production Shops Manager on technical design of stock items for best uses and practices

* Provide mentorship to new Overhire Carpenters hired on a rolling basis

* Maintain running inventories on needed consumables and diagnostics of tools

* Build scenery with Overhire Carpenters or independently as needed

* Receive lumber orders and safely stock deliveries into shelving in shops

* Attend occasional production or staff meetings as assigned

* Additional responsibilities as assigned

WORK MODE

This position is primarily in-person and is based on campus to support effective in-person collaboration and engagement.

Hybrid work arrangements may be considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on the nature of the role and operational needs. Any such arrangement must be discussed and approved in advance by the appropriate division lead or their designee.

Some weekend and weeknight shifts may be scheduled pending departmental need.

SALARY RANGE

$30.00/hour

Minimum Qualifications:

* Two years previous experience in theatrical carpentry is required

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills

* The ability to work productively, graciously, and professionally under strict time and space constraints

* Strongly skilled with power tools and general carpentry best practices

* In-depth knowledge of theatrical carpentry and scenic shop safety guidelines and policies

* Experienced or able to learn and develop fluency in The New School's suite of applications including Google Suite, Microsoft…
