The US Daily Mail is looking for an inquisitive, fast-moving and highly accurate Science Reporter to join our newsroom. The ideal candidate will have a strong grasp of scientific concepts across multiple disciplines and the ability to turn complex research into clear, engaging journalism for a broad audience. This role combines daily news writing with deeper enterprise features, requiring strong editorial instincts, excellent sourcing skills and a passion for explaining how science shapes the world.
Key Responsibilities Reporting & WritingPitch and produce multiple story ideas, many exclusive or original, on a daily basis across breaking science news, explainers, analysis pieces and enterprise features.
Translate complex scientific papers, data and technical concepts into accessible, accurate and compelling copy.
Fact-check all scientific claims rigorously and highlight important caveats, uncertainties and context for readers.
Report confidently on new research, preprints, emerging technologies, scientific claims, regulatory developments and policy shifts.
An ability and willingness to create engaging content across multiple platforms, using a variety of digital media tools and techniques, including recording video and audio.
Sourcing & ResearchMonitor scientific journals, preprint servers, government databases and research institutions for story leads and trends.
Conduct interviews with scientists, researchers, industry experts, regulators and agencies.
Build and maintain a strong network of expert sources and feel comfortable calling them under tight deadlines.
Editorial & Digital SkillsCraft strong, accurate headlines and copy to maximise reach and engagement.
Use social media platforms to identify emerging topics, trending issues and science stories of public interest.
Contribute science and technology stories to the daily news list and proactively generate original ideas.
Key Skills & ExperienceBroad and up-to-date knowledge across scientific fields (essential).
Ability to read and interpret complex scientific studies and communicate them clearly to a general audience.
Strong news judgment and the ability to identify significant developments within scientific research and policy.
At least 3-5 years working as a science writer at a newspaper, news website, magazine or television news show.
A clear understanding of theDaily
Mail.combrand, editorial voice and audience.
Excellent writing, interviewing and fact-checking skills.
Ability to work independently, manage deadlines and originate story ideas.
Comfortable making expert calls and working at speed during breaking news situations.
Familiarity with digital publishing tools, best practices and audience engagement strategies.
This is an in-office position, based in New York City and, when not travelling on stories, will require attendance in the office five days a week.
Salary range - $75,000-$85,000 DOE
