About 3 Lakes Bookkeeping

3 Lakes Bookkeeping is a growing bookkeeping and advisory firm supporting small businesses with clean, accurate books and thoughtful financial guidance. We value clarity, integrity, and relationships both with our clients and within our team.

We are a small but growing team and are intentionally building something long-term. This role is designed for someone who wants to grow with us, take ownership, and help shape the future of the firm.

Role Description

We are seeking a senior-level team member to support bookkeeping operations, solve complex problems, and help manage client work. This is not a checklist-based role. Each day may look different and requires critical thinking, initiative, and strong problem-solving skills.

You will be responsible for reviewing work, reviewing reporting for accuracy, untangling messy situations and questions from the junior bookkeeper. Basically helping to ensure our clients’ books are accurate, compliant, and meaningful. You will work closely with the owner and help support junior staff as the firm continues to grow.

Initial training will be completed in person at our River Falls office to build trust, alignment, and familiarity with our processes. After training, the role is mostly remote with flexible hours (ability to work in the office if desired). Some work may eventually be client-facing, including calls or Zoom meetings as needed.

Key Responsibilities

These will be delegated gradually as training over a few months continues.

  • Review bookkeeping work and identify errors, inconsistencies, or risks
  • Handle complex Quick Books Online clean-ups and corrections
  • File and correct sales tax returns (WI, MN, and other states as applicable)
  • Run payroll and reconcile payroll liabilities
  • Resolve client issues by communicating with the IRS or state Departments of Revenue
  • Oversee and review work completed by a junior bookkeeper
  • Assist with client onboarding and system setup
  • Help manage client email communication and follow-ups
  • Take ownership of assigned issues and bring 2–3 possible solutions when problems arise
  • Support internal process improvement and documentation as the firm grows
  • Starting around 8–10 hours per week
  • After training, 15–20 hours per week
  • Additional hours available as skills, confidence, and responsibilities grow

This role is intended to be long-term, with increasing responsibility over time.

Qualifications

Required

  • 1–2+ years of experience in bookkeeping, accounting, or tax-related work
  • Advanced knowledge of Quick Books Online or accounting/tax fundamentals
  • Strong understanding of financial statements
  • Advanced Excel skills (must be willing to demonstrate during the interview process)
  • High level of comfort with technology and learning new systems
  • Excellent attention to detail and organization
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to work independently without step-by-step SOPs for every task
  • Willingness to call the IRS or state agencies to resolve issues
  • Local to River Falls, WI for in-person training

Preferred (but not required)

  • Sales tax filing experience
  • Payroll processing and payroll tax reconciliation experience
  • Prior experience reviewing others’ work
  • Interest in relationship-building or networking
  • Desire to grow into a leadership or advisory role
