Candidate will be required to perform and pass a demonstrative abilities test utilizing medium to heavy equipment in order to move forward to an interview panel.
Why does the job exist?
Position will operate medium to heavy duty equipment to maintain US and New Mexico highways for the safety of the traveling public.
How does it get done?
Incumbent will operate medium to heavy equipment to maintain US and New Mexico highways. Incumbent will perform a variety of skilled and semi skilled maintenance duties required in the patrol. Use of various hand tools. Knowledge and experience in snow removal and emergency operations (call outs). Removal of trash and dead animals from right of way.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in:
- traffic control
- Fence maintenance and guardrail repair
- Class "A" commercial driver's license will have preference.
Minimum Qualification
High School diploma or equivalent and six (6) months of experience maintaining roads and operating medium to heavy-duty equipment to include loader, five (5) and ten (10) yard dump trucks, self-propelled brooms, rollers, or mowers. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) months may substitute for the required experience.
Must possess a valid driver's license and a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), (or equivalent licenses from another state) within one (1) year of hire. This position may require Herbicide, Tanker and/or Hazmat endorsement.
Employment Requirements
This position is designated a safety sensitive position within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.
Employment requires successful completion of a post-offer physical and pre-employment drug test; employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and must have or obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License within one (1) year of hire. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results. Must successfully pass demonstrated abilities test with a 75% or better.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow. May include exposure to:
Sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants, and infected trash.
Moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products;
Temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations.
High speed/high volume traffic and loud noises;
Falls and bruises, considerable physical strain;
Standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control. Hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call out for weather (including snow removal), accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; willingness to accept change of geographical assignments; interaction with the public. Frequent statewide travel is required. Must be able to respond to emergency callouts on short notice.
