Description

It is the mission of the Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps to lead our nations back to cultural and ecological well-being. The Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps has offices in Acoma, Albuquerque, Gallup (Navajo Nation), Zuni, and Hopi. Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps serves local Indigenous communities in the regions we operate.

Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument is an innovative and fast-paced park that protects the archaeological and historical significance and values of the Salinas province by preserving the ruins and artifacts of indigenous Pueblos, associated 17th century Spanish Franciscan missions architecture, and 19th century Spanish rancheros. Salinas consists of three discontinuous units - Abo, Quarai, and Gran Quivira - that stand as reminders of the Spanish and Pueblo people's early encounters and prompt exploration of today s interactions among different people.

The Interpretation and Visitor Services Division supports park operations by providing information and guidance to visitors at each of our 4 visitor centers; by presenting and leading interpretive talks and hikes; by creating and developing innovative and creative content (i.e., programs, digital content, etc.); and by being a respectful and courteous team member of Salinas.

Salinas Pueblo Missions is looking for a tribal youth, and future leader, to join its team to help the park build and leverage Tribal communities’ partnerships, to develop strategies to embed the Tribal/Puebloan perspective into interpretive, educational and environmental programs, and to assist with visitor services duties and park programs/events.

Description of Duties

The Ameri Corps Member will support the Division with starting the journey to embed the Tribal/Puebloan perspective into not only the park's programming, but also into the day-to-day park management and stewardship decision-making processes, which directly impact the tangible and intangible resources park staff, volunteers, and interns have been tasked with respecting and protecting.

  • Development of hands-on interpretation and environmental education activities and online tools that include the Tribal/Puebloan perspective.
  • Essentials functions and responsibilities:
    • Develop Tribal hands-on interpretation and environmental education activities that include the Tribal/Puebloan perspective.
    • Create online tools, e.g., Story Maps, videos, social media posts, etc., that highlight Tribal/Puebloan stories throughout the park's website and social media.
    • Implementation of activities and online tools developed throughout length of internship.
  • Brainstorm, create and leverage new and existing Tribal Communities Partnerships.
  • Essentials functions and responsibilities:
    • Develop Tribal Communities partnership contact list and/or GIS map that highlights the different partnerships the park can collaborate with.
    • Implement strategies for sustaining new and existing Tribal Communities partnerships.
    • Support with creation of innovative communication methods with Tribal Communities partnerships.
  • Foster professional development and life-long environmental stewardship.
  • Essentials functions and responsibilities:
    • Identify career aspirations and explore fields of interest within park, agency and department.
    • Identify trainings and certifications opportunities to participate in to develop/improve specific knowledge and skills.
    • Work closely with Interpretation and Visitor Services team and other park Divisions to learn about career fields, and exchange ideas/perspectives on future career aspirations.
    • Exposure to interpretation and visitor services training to assist with park programs/events, and ability to interact with visitors.
