Position: Nutrition Supervisor (DOH/PHD/WIC #29025)
Location: Taos

Overview

Salary: $26.57 - $39.86 Hourly; $55,273 - $82,909 Annually. This position is a Pay Band C7.

The New Mexico WIC Program, Department of Health and Family Health bureau safeguards the health of nutritionally at-risk low-income pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants, children and seniors by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, nutrition information for healthy eating, health counseling, breastfeeding support, nutrition classes, cooking classes, and referrals to health care providers and social services.

The posting applies to ongoing recruitment and reflects the program’s mission to serve eligible participants with nutrition education and services.

Responsibilities
  • Screen applicants to determine eligibility by assessing income, residency, and nutritional risk.
  • Prescribe food packages and provide group and one-on-one nutrition education, including breastfeeding promotion and support tailored to identified needs.
  • Identify the need for individual care plans and implement them for low-risk participants.
  • Refer participants to other health and social services and provide follow-up to referrals; document nutrition services, including referrals and follow-up.
  • Maintain effective and efficient WIC Program operations by assessing and documenting participants’ nutrition risks; determine eligibility and provide education (one-on-one and/or group) including breastfeeding support.
  • Assess needs for use of a breast pump and other breastfeeding education; obtain and assess hemoglobin and anthropometrics on each participant.
  • Provide quality client services using Participant Centered Education (PCE) as required by the United States Department of Agriculture.
  • Assist families in developing healthy eating goals and provide ongoing nutrition education.
  • Refer participants to other health and social services; perform clerical duties (filing, data entry, word processing, office equipment use) and support mailings, phones, appointments, inventory, archiving, vendor monitoring, supplies, pharmacy orders, and vehicle coordination.
  • Achieve and maintain quality and customer service satisfaction and protect participant and agency confidentiality.
  • Assist Nutritionist Supervisor with community outreach and coordination with Public Health programs, including health fairs and nutrition education materials with approved messages.
  • Demonstrate support of WIC’s mission, vision and philosophy in delivering all services; communicate with a diverse audience.
Customers

Qualified pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women; infants and children up to age five (5).

Ideal Candidate

Fluent in English and Spanish; experience entering and retrieving data from multiple information systems (including the New Mexico Women, Infants & Children Program Automated Data System); providing and coordinating direct nutrition services (screening, assessment, planning, intervention, education, evaluation) according to program guidelines; collaborating with community organizations; assisting in department nutrition programs; counseling individuals and groups on nutrition and healthy eating; and managing records to improve quality of life.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a social, community, health, education, or nutritional field. Three (3) years of experience related to the essential duties. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.

Working Conditions

Office setting with extensive computer use; extended driving periods and ability to lift up to 50 pounds may be required. Potential exposure to communicable diseases and moderate office noise, heat, cold, and smells. May be required to respond to Public Health emergencies during non-traditional hours. Some travel with occasional overnight stays may be required.
