Military and Family Life Counselor

Summary

MFLC Counselors provide assessment, short‑term, solution‑focused counseling services and non‑traditional walk‑around participant outreach to eligible individuals, military children and youth of all ages. This includes collaboration and consultation with teachers, parents, and administrators to strengthen and increase the child’s/youth’s capacity for healthy development. MFLC services enhance participants’ ability to cope with the many challenges associated with the complex dynamics unique to the military service environment.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provide support for children of any age working in early childhood settings and schools. The CYB‑MFLC would also serve to provide services for staff and parents.
  • Possess in-depth knowledge of the conduct, activities, practices, and operations of the MFLC program.
  • Provide non‑medical counseling, consulting, and outreach services to eligible participants.
  • Apply preventive models that strengthen service members’ and their families’ readiness and resilience by reducing the stresses of military life cycle.
  • Model evidence‑based intervention approaches.
  • Teach coping strategies, emotion management, and problem‑solving skills to families and/or caregivers.
  • Teach strategies supporting management of life challenges more effectively.
  • Facilitate psychological and behavioral awareness.
  • Provide education about the meaning of specific symptoms and the causes, effects, and implications of identified issues.
  • Provide services through multi‑level intervention (e.g., classroom, family, school, community) while understanding contextual and cultural factors.
  • Assist educators with strategies for cultivating a deeper understanding of factors that shape young children’s social‑emotional development.
  • Perform accurate assessment of the client’s presenting problem and plan effective treatment.
  • Conduct government‑approved presentations as requested.
  • Enter counselor activity reporting daily through issued equipment, ensuring accurate reporting and maintaining confidentiality of participants.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Required Qualifications
  • U.S. citizenship and fluency in English.
  • Master’s degree or higher from an accredited graduate program in a relevant behavioral health field (social work, psychology, marriage/family therapy, or counseling).
  • Valid independent license in the mental health field from any U.S. state or territory (LCSW, LMFT, LPCC, LMHC, Psychologist).
  • Pass a basic background check, Child National Agency Check, and Inquiries (NACI/CNACI) clearance, commonly called a Public Trust clearance.
  • Pass all background/suitability checks, including additional installation‑specific requirements.
  • Knowledge of the difficulties of adjusting to general life stresses and those specific to military life, and experience providing short‑term counseling for those issues.
  • Knowledge of standard documentation requirements for clinical services.
  • Knowledge of available military and community referral resources.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and skilled use of office software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification or additional training as an Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant.
