GENERAL DEFINITION
Protect life and property, preserve law and order, and keep the peace while promoting safety and well-being through the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws consistent with the mission and goals of the Pueblo of Zuni Police Department.
SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWork is performed under the supervision of a Police Sergeant. The incumbent works with a high degree of independence and is required to make instantaneous decisions in emergency situations to protect lives and property, prevent crimes and maintain order.
SUPERVISION EXERCISEDMay be assigned occasionally as an acting shift supervisor.
DUTIESPatrols areas of assignment in patrol vehicle and on foot to enforce various laws.
- Familiarizes self with the Zuni Reservation, Jurisdiction, Pueblo of Zuni the Criminal Code and Traffic Code and Pueblo of Zuni Domestic Violence Code.
- Responsible for the enforcement of Federal, State of New Mexico and Pueblo of Zuni Tribal traffic and criminal codes, laws, ordinances and statutes.
- Responds to 911 calls and other police service requests as either the first officer or as a back up.
- Identify, pursue, and arrest suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts.
- Monitor traffic to ensure motorists observe traffic regulations and exhibit safe driving procedures.
- Maintains safe traffic conditions by monitoring and directing traffic, enforcing laws and ordinances, investigating accidents, providing escort, and reporting unsafe streets and facilities.
- Investigates domestic violence, suspicious situations, and/or persons and taking appropriate action.
- Conducts investigations of crashes, misdemeanors, and minor crimes;
- Calls for backup officers and emergency vehicles (Zuni Fire Department and EMS).
- Administers first aid, secures the scene, obtains physical evidence, seeks out and questions witnesses and suspects, takes detailed measurements and photographs.
- Issues citations or makes arrests as appropriate.
- Prepares detailed investigative reports.
- In the case of major crimes, unattended deaths, and serious crashes involving deaths, controls the scene until Criminal Investigators arrive then assists in investigations as required.
Apprehends individuals, writes reports, and attends related court hearings.
- Takes person into custody for booking procedure to the Zuni Detention Center and filing formal charges as necessary.
- Prepares and submits reports of incidents, detailed investigative reports, and daily activities and other narrative and statistical reports as required.
- Testifies at hearings and trials in Federal, State of New Mexico, and Pueblo of Zuni Tribal courts.
Provides related services associated with police work.
- Disperses unruly crowds at public gatherings.
- Coordinates traffic and crowd control for funerals, ceremonies, parades, traffic around fires & other disruptions, and other large gatherings.
- Responds to calls for assistance from sick or injured persons and administers first aid.
- Accompanies social and child protective services workers in child abuse, child sexual assault, and battered family cases.
- Serves or processes a variety of civil papers, such as summons, subpoenas, eviction notices, execution and restitution papers, and the like.
- Sets up and conducts roadblocks to check for compliance with Tribal and State motor vehicle codes or to locate wanted persons.
- Direct traffic flow and reroute traffic in case of emergencies.
- Participates in drug raids and surveillance operations.
- Delivers death and emergency messages.
- Checks on the welfare of people who live in isolated reservation areas and conduct welfare checks on homebound elderly.
May be assigned occasionally as an acting supervisor in the absence of the shift supervisor.
