Language and Culture Teacher (Healthcare) Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Language and Culture Department Manager, the teacher organizes and implements a Keres language educational curriculum for Santa Ana Pueblo members from kindergarten to twelfth grades and for the community youth and adult population.

This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only of the tasks performed by this position and is not all-inclusive.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Align language and culture instructions for grade levels assigned from Kindergarten through Twelfth grades with content learning strategies and submit lesson plans for each nine weeks.
  • Teach in a manner that addresses individual student needs, special needs, and enables the student to continuously make progress throughout the school year.
  • Monitor each student's progress toward achieving content learning standards.
  • Submit student grades, progress reports and language proficiency score every nine weeks.
  • Modify instructional methods when necessary for students to actively engage in learning.
  • Integrate technology to support in- and out-of-classroom instructions.
  • Reach out to parent(s) to promote greater parental and familial involvement in their student(s) Language and culture in-class learning.
  • Develop plans and schedules for the teacher substitutes and assistants and/or classroom volunteers.
  • Collaborate with Pueblo of Santa Ana Departments and entities on community promotional activities.
  • Provide Keres language learning opportunities for the adult and youth community members.
  • Support and assist with the Tamaya linguistic learning development for all age groups.
  • Attend relevant and age-appropriate Professional Development Training.
  • Perform other duties and tasks relevant to the position as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate's degree and/or certifications obtained for Native American Indian Language Development Training, seminars, workshops, participation & active involvement in the Pueblo of Santa Ana Adult language and cultural learning, proficient in the Tamaya Keres language, culture, and traditions or 2 years of teaching experience can be substituted for the associate's degree.
  • Must obtain Teacher Certification from the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED), within 6 months of hire.
  • Must successfully pass a background investigation and possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver's license.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications
  • Knowledge and understanding of Santa Ana traditions, language, history, and culture.
  • Knowledge and understanding of adult and youth learning principles, and of a wide range of training methods, techniques, and formats.
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and preparation procedures.
  • Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs in a Windows environment and the use of technology.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to design, develop, implement, and evaluate training plans, curricula, and methodology.
  • Ability to interact well with individuals from a wide range of ages and skill levels.
  • Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to interpret applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality as required of all employees.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand, sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear and will frequently is required to walk; and reach with hands and arms. The employee occasionally is required to climb, balance, kneel, stoop, and crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Environment

Work to be performed in a classroom, community and/or outdoor setting with moderate to loud noise levels and where an employee may be exposed to unpleasant odors, hazardous material, and infectious disease. There is frequent interaction with children, school staff, the public and Pueblo of Santa Ana Tribal members, and employees.
