Opportunity Statement
The United World College-USA (UWC-USA) was founded in 1982 and is one of 18 United World College campuses worldwide. UWC-USA is the only UWC campus in the United States. The UWC movement seeks to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. UWC-USA values inclusion, diversity, equity, and access as part of its mission to bring people together across differences in service of a more peaceful and sustainable world.
With the IB at the center of the academic program and a focus on experiential learning in a multinational/multicultural boarding environment, UWC-USA aims to challenge students, faculty, and staff to grow in a multi-perspectival community that reflects democratic processes.
What is the UWC-USA mission?
We embrace the UWC mission to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future by preparing students to serve as catalysts for unity, peace, and sustainability in their personal lives, communities, and relationship to the environment. This is achieved through intentional, place-based programming, an integral approach to our programming and our lives together, and opportunities for student autonomy and leadership under caring staff and faculty guidance.
How is UWC-USA unique?
UWC-USA participates in the UWC movement and operates a philanthropy-based educational model to make the program accessible to students from families with modest financial resources, with 85% of students receiving a financial award. The school is located in rural Northern New Mexico and brings together students from over 80 countries to form a diverse community.
What is our point of view?
On challenges in the world: UWC’s mission focuses on uniting young people before prejudices are solidified to promote peace and sustainability. Global obstacles include identity-based differences, inequality, political polarization, climate change, and biodiversity loss. The personal challenges for students include navigating diversity, assimilation pressures, evolving social identities, and the impact of technology and markets on relationships and well-being.
- Economic, political, and social inequality between those at the center and those on the margins of societies worldwide;
- Political polarization rooted in ideology, grievance, and uneven democratic practice/ institutions;
- Climate change, ecosystem destruction, and biodiversity collapse, resulting from destructive modes of production, consumption, and land use.
In this global context, students also face personal challenges as they grow into healthy young adults and thoughtful leaders amid cultural and educational tensions. Challenges include balancing diversity with local identity, managing new social identities and networks, and navigating technology’s impact on learning and relationships.
On opportunities in international, boarding school education
The UWC boarding school model focuses on international and intercultural understanding, inquiry-based learning through the IB, experiential learning, and a commitment to diversity. UWC-USA participates in ongoing dialogues with UWC International and the International Baccalaureate Office to explore new educational directions for the modern age.
