Yale New Haven Health is expanding its neurosurgery services to include 24/7 Advanced Practice Provider (APP) coverage. We are seeking motivated and skilled Physician Assistants to join our growing neurosurgery team. This dynamic role offers a rotating schedule of either four 10-hour shifts or three 13-hour shifts, including days, nights, and weekends, to support continuous patient care.
Schedule: Full time, benefits eligible
Key Responsibilities- Provide post-operative care for neurosurgical patients, including those with brain, spine, and stroke-related conditions
- Perform daily rounding and post-operative management
- Prepare and complete discharge summaries
- Assist with the management of patients with external ventricular drains (EVDs)
- Evaluate and manage neurosurgery consults, including:
- Presenting and discussing cases with neurosurgeons
- Acting as a liaison between neurosurgery and other services (Medicine, Surgery, Trauma, SICU)
- Respond to trauma patients with critical neurosurgical injuries in collaboration with trauma and emergency teams
- Perform bedside procedures including:
- Removal of neurosurgical drains
- Assistance with EVD placement
- Significant operative responsibility. Looking for someone with OR first assisting experience, and previous neurosurgery experience required
- Previous experience in neurosurgery, critical care, trauma, or surgical subspecialties preferred
- Proficient in high-acuity patient management and multidisciplinary coordination
- Strong communication and critical thinking skills
- Willingness to work flexible schedules including nights and weekends

Responsibilities
- Clinical Care - The Physician Assistant (PA) or the Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team. The NP/PA collaborates with the attending supervising/collaborating physician(s) in accordance with state law, hospital regulations, policy, protocols and clinical pathways and may provide autonomous team-based care. Obtains medical histories, performs physical examinations, reviews diagnostic/therapeutic tests and radiologic results, and formulates and manages patient treatment plans.
The NP/PA may perform procedures, prescribe treatment and medications in accordance with institutional and state guidelines. In some specialties, the NP/PA may have autonomous practice managing certain patient populations. The NP/PA may also function as first or second assistant on operative cases, within scope and prerequisites. Other duties may include responding to emergencies within YNHHS parameters. - Patient Education & Psychosocial Support - Educate patients/families on care and resources, in collaboration with the supervising/collaborating MD; provide psychosocial support to patients and families.
- Information Management - Ensure appropriate documentation per hospital and regulatory requirements and protect information from unauthorized access, modification, destruction, or disclosure.
- Quality Management - Demonstrate professionalism and commitment to patient care; ensure compliance with healthcare regulatory requirements, standards, and recommendations.
- Professional Development - Engage in projects to maintain and advance professional competency; serve as a clinical resource, potential preceptor, mentor, and contributor to research and quality improvement.
- Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program.
- Clinical working experience in the specialty is preferred but not required.
- APPs must be appointed to the affiliated medical staff and credentialed; evidence of current competence to practice must be provided.
- Active PA Certification by NCCPA, Connecticut State PA License, ACLS/BLS, and DEA as applicable.
- Additional licensure, certifications, and continuing education credits may be required based on position and specialty.
