Overview
Department 489 is part of the COLUMBIA Integrated Power Systems and COLUMBIA Mechanical Components Directorate and is responsible for developing components for the COLOMBIA Class Main Propulsion System and S1B propulsion plant. This Engineering Supervisor position is responsible for shipyard and fleet support for the main propulsion motor (MPM).
This position is responsible for the planning, scheduling, and execution of all work necessary in the Shipyard to support installation of the MPM, Shipyard acceptance testing, as well as future Fleet support. This includes receipt and rejection control, coordinating preventative maintenance, supporting installation of the MPM onto the motor module, managing change requests (CRs) and change notices (CNs), test procedure review, coordination of Engineering and vendor support in the Shipyard, and support of any Shipyard or Fleet emergent issues.
This role is responsible for the supervision of approximately eight salaried engineering personnel, delegation of job assignments, budget control, schedule management, coaching and mentoring of employees, employee development planning, interviewing/hiring activities, prioritization of work, development of engineering estimates, commitment reporting, and appraisal of employee performance.
This position requires refined interpersonal skills for regular interaction and close collaboration with the NAVSEA and NNL programmatic and technical communities, various component suppliers, and Electric Boat Engineering, Finance, Procurement, Program Office, and Operations organizations. Interaction with Electric Boat Focus Factories is also expected, as well as any lead trades at those locations.
This position works closely with the Department 489 Supervisor of MPM Procurement and Manufacturing, who manages the baseline design details of the MPM, works with the vendor base to deliver completed MPMs to the Shipyard, and leads production testing. Coordination is required to understand delivery dates, technical issues as they develop, any deferred work, and the impact of liabilities open at the time of shipment.
QualificationsRequired:
- Minimum of a B.S. in engineering
- Candidates for this position must have at least 4 years of related engineering experience
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance through the department of defense
Preferred:
- Demonstrated component vendor management experience
- B.S. in Electrical or Mechanical engineering
- Understanding of processes related to rejection control, rigging, major moves, installation of large and complex machinery
- Demonstrated proficiency in Teamcenter, including disposition of CR/CN
- Demonstrated proficiency in Shipyard manufacturing and test procedures, processes, and standards
- Demonstrated aptitude for coaching, mentoring, enhancing employee technical skills
- Experience coordinating with internal and external customers
- Experience with EVM, Cost Estimating, and Schedule Management
- Strong interpersonal skills, leadership ability, and be capable of managing under pressure
