Overview

ER/ICU Veterinary Technician at Animal Emergency & Referral Associates (AERA) in West Caldwell, NJ. This position is for a dedicated and enthusiastic Certified Veterinary Technician/Experienced Veterinary Assistant to join the Emergency team. The hospital evolved to provide around-the-clock emergency services and multi-specialty care, with a commitment to exceptional pet care.

Position

The Overnight ER/ICU Veterinary Technician serves as primary support for ER doctors, assisting with treatments and procedures while maintaining the highest quality of patient care. The role requires exceptional attention to detail, cleanliness, and collaboration to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and optimal patient outcomes. Strong communication skills are essential for seamless coordination with patients and staff.

Compensation
  • $23-$30 per hour based on skill level/experience
  • Credentialed Veterinary Technicians: $30-$45 hourly
  • Overnight differentiials offered
  • Sign-on bonus offered to qualified candidates
  • LVT $5,000; VTS $7,500
Anticipated Schedule
  • Full Time
  • Flexible days/times
  • 3x12/4x10 hour shifts
  • 8pm-8am / 8pm-6am / 10pm-10am / 10pm-8am
Key Responsibilities
  • Triage, patient assessment, vital data collection, IV placement, phlebotomy, intubation, injections, radiology, laboratory, basic anesthesia (preparation/assistance/monitoring), RECOVER CPR
  • Administer basic first aid as needed
  • Administer treatments and monitor status of critical care and ICU patients
  • Provide stabilization support (temperature, BP, fluid resuscitation, etc.) for incoming emergencies
  • Document and communicate patient information accurately in medical records
  • Communicate patient status changes with doctors
  • Maintain clean, dry, comfortable surroundings for all patients
  • Set up and maintain equipment; knowledge of monitoring/diagnostic tools
  • Restrain patients safely and effectively
  • Record medical history/data accurately
  • Prepare and administer medications and treatments as prescribed
  • Collect, prepare, label, and test laboratory specimens
  • Assist with euthanasia and aftercare of remains as needed
  • Provide basic client education on nutrition, home care, zoonotic diseases, medications, postoperative care, and hospital protocols
  • Restock and maintain cleanliness of ICU, treatment areas, exam rooms, lab, pharmacy, radiology, and isolation areas
  • Train less experienced staff and cross-train to assist in other areas as needed
Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least 2 years of applicable experience as a veterinary technician/assistant
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and sanitation/sterilization practices
  • Understanding of medical terminology and equipment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Fluent English (speaking and reading); multilingual is a plus
  • Ability to calculate accurate dosages and injections
  • Familiarity with CPR and rescue breathing
  • Ability to take direction and follow instructions under varying conditions
  • Initiative and ability to anticipate needs of doctors and nurses
  • Ability to react quickly and remain calm under pressure in emergencies
  • Excellent communication and people skills
  • Good grooming and hygiene; team-oriented attitude
  • Tact and diplomacy when dealing with clients facing various problems
  • Ability to work with and without direct supervision
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Certified Veterinary Technician (LVT, RVT, CVT)
  • 2 years’ experience in emergency or specialty setting
