Cape May County Park and Zoo Seasonal Education Keeper
Position Purpose
Our mission at the Cape May County Zoo is to deliver a learning experience that inspires all growing minds to appreciate and respect the world around us, while enhancing awareness of conservation. Under the direction of the Education Department Supervisor, this position will be responsible for the daily husbandry and care of the Ambassador Animal collection consisting of various species of reptiles, birds, and mammals, along with creating and providing enrichment and training for them.
This position is also expected to conduct educational programs for visitors of all ages, interact with zoo guests during animal encounters, presentations, special events, and private zoo tours. As a small team we take pride in our department’s cohesiveness and focus our energy on providing the best experience for all our animals and our guests.
Essential Job Functions
- Conduct formal and informal on and off-site programs and guest interactions
- Conducts private animal encounters, tours of the zoo, and special events
- Provides husbandry needs of all animals in care by participating in daily cleaning and enclosure maintenance, diet preparation, feeding, training, and enrichment
- Responsible for daily observation of animal health and welfare. Reports abnormal behavior and problems to the supervisor
- Input data, observations, behavioral, and medical notes into daily logs and records
- Assist with conducting, reviewing, and discussing animal welfare assessments
- Assist in the daily handling of animals for husbandry needs and programming use
- Assists in animal training, developing training plans, and recording of training notes for husbandry needs and programming use
- Provide daily enrichment, help build/create new enrichment items, and record enrichment into a daily log
- Collaborates with all team members to achieve common husbandry and program goals
- Functions effectively in both team and individual settings, and works toward adopting and creating the best animal welfare practices
- Identifies and communicates with the maintenance of repairs needed for the safety of animals, visitors, and staff as well as overall upkeep of the facilities
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology, Wildlife Biology, Conservation Education, Zoo Science, Education, or related field.
- Animal care experience, preferably at an AZA facility.
- Excellent public speaking, communication skills, creative thinking, and originality.
- Ability to handle and present ambassador animals in a safe, dignified manner.
- Ability to work 40 hours per week, including weekends and holidays.
- Ability to work outside in all weather conditions and can lift at least 50 pounds.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
- Childcare experience preferred
- Ability to complete tasks thoroughly and efficiently.
