Job DescriptionThe Peer Recovery Support Specialist draws upon their lived experience to carry a message of hope and recovery to individuals experiencing a substance use disorder. By offering encouragement, support, outreach, service linkages, and advocacy, the PRSS cultivates and secures connections with parents/caregivers while coaching them to achieve recovery goals and model personal responsibility.
Responsibilities- Reinforce, guide, and ensure that parents/caregivers and their families understand that recovery is possible, building on strengths, coping abilities, and available resources.
- Assist parents/caregivers with gaining the skills and resources needed to initiate and maintain recovery.
- Assist in establishing and sustaining a social and physical environment supportive of recovery.
- Enhance identification and participation in the recovery community.
- Empower parents/caregivers to make self‑determined and self‑directed choices about their recovery pathway.
- Collaborate with the parent/caregiver to develop a Recovery Plan, including culturally competent services that identify measurable goals, assess strengths, identify barriers, and monitor progress.
- Attend all Family Team Meetings and focus on supervision as requested.
- Participate in case consultation with the parent/caregiver, DCP&P case worker, and attend consortia if the parent/caregiver is presented.
- Attend agency staff meetings.
- Educate the parent/caregiver on how to appropriately navigate treatment, social services, and recovery support systems.
- Serve as a positive role model by sharing knowledge, hope, and skills.
- Communicate proficiently—written and verbal—exhibiting critical thinking.
- High school diploma or equivalency;
Bachelor’s degree is preferred. - Communication skills: written and verbal.
- Basic computer skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Knowledge of addictions preferred.
- At least 2 continuous years of sustained recovery.
- Must pass a pre‑employment drug test and background check.
The Department of Children and Families approved Peer Recovery Support Service training—including Ethics, Division of Child Protection and Permanency—is required. Additional trainings may include Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Human Trafficking, Psychological First Aid, and all agency‑specific trainings.
