Job Description
This internship provides hands‑on experience working on key fiber laser projects with harmonics and optical metrology, under the guidance of the Metrology Team.
Responsibilities- Work on key fiber laser projects with harmonics and optical metrology projects under the direct supervision of the Metrology Team.
- Perform lab work using optical interferometers, oscilloscopes, photodetectors, pulse generators, monochromators, and lasers; high‑power laser experience is a plus.
- Participate in the final presentation of accomplishments during the internship at the company’s all‑employee meeting.
- Engage in networking, team‑building events, and other professional development activities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
- Team‑oriented with the ability to work independently.
- Adaptable, eager to learn, and able to work in a fast‑paced environment.
- Attention to detail, strong time‑management skills.
- Solid knowledge of physical optics, Gaussian beams, laser physics, and nonlinear optics.
- Good knowledge of crystal optics.
- Experience with optical design and tolerancing using ZEMAX or equivalent;
Solid Works experience is a plus. - Proficiency in alignment of optical components.
- Diverse experience with optical technologies and devices (polarization devices, nonlinear optics, objectives, light sources, fibers, cameras).
- Current enrollment in a bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. program in laser or optical engineering or a closely related field.
- Relevant coursework or extracurricular experience in physics or optics. Preference for master’s or Ph.D. candidates; undergraduates with specific expertise may be considered.
- Open to students who have graduated within one year of the internship start date.
Requirement:
Bachelor’s degree (or ongoing) in laser/optical engineering or related physics/engineering field. Preference for Master’s or Ph.D. students.
- This role is based on‑site in Budd Lake, NJ.
- Regular use of a computer and other office equipment is necessary.
- Sitting for extended periods while working on a computer or in meetings.
- Use of hands and fingers for typing, writing, and handling documents.
- Occasional lifting of objects or materials up to 20 pounds.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
- All employees are required to follow the site EHS procedures and Coherent Corp. EHS standards.
- Responsible for execution and maintenance of ISO 9000, 9001, 14001, or other applicable standards, as applicable to the role.
