At VB Spine, you’ll be part of a mission‑focused team that supports surgeons during life‑changing spinal procedures. We’re looking for skilled, hands‑on machinists ready to thrive in a fast‑paced R&D environment, master high‑precision prototyping, and directly contribute to the development of innovative medical devices. As a Prototype Machinist, you’ll machine low‑volume, tight‑tolerance prototype components and test fixtures, collaborate closely with design engineers, and help bring next‑generation spinal implants and instruments from concept to reality.
- Machine complex prototype and pre‑production medical device components to extremely tight tolerances
- Set up, program (as applicable), and operate CNC mills, lathes, wire EDM (3‑, 4‑, or 5‑axis), and manual machine shop equipment
- Work from engineering drawings, 3D CAD models, and verbal instructions to produce parts accurately and efficiently
- Interpret and apply GD&T per ASME Y14.5 standards
- Collaborate closely with design engineers to support rapid design iteration, problem‑solving, and feedback loops
- Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, and machining strategies optimized for prototype work
- Machine a variety of materials including stainless steels, titanium, aluminum, and engineering plastics
- Perform in‑process and final inspections using precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, optical comparators, CMM, etc.)
- Provide recommendations to design engineers for improved design for manufacturability (DFM)
- Create and modify test fixtures to support device testing and evaluation
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment
- Support continuous improvement of machining processes and prototyping workflows
- 2+ years of hands‑on machining experience, preferably in a prototype or R&D environment
- Strong CNC machining background (manual machining experience a plus)
- Proven experience machining tight‑tolerance components
- Ability to read and interpret complex mechanical drawings and CAD models
- Proficiency with precision measurement and inspection techniques
- Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to work independently
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Experience in medical device, aerospace, or other regulated industries (preferred)
- Familiarity with CAM software (e.g., ESPRIT, Mastercam, Fusion 360, or similar) (preferred)
- Experience with wire EDM or additive manufacturing (preferred)
Understanding of Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles (preferred)
- Frequently use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls
- Occasionally lift up to 30 pounds
- Vision requirements include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
- Work is performed in a typical machine shop environment
