Description
The Lawrenceville School seeks enthusiastic, energetic, collegial individuals who want to work with both adults and students in a collaborative and inclusive academic setting. The In‑Person Prefect position requires full-time work during the 3‑week duration of the program. The in‑person prefect is asked to live in a dorm and be accessible for work 24/7 during the program.
The Summer Scholars program runs from Monday, July 6, 2026, to Friday, July 24, 2026. All in‑person prefects must attend the one to four‑hour virtual orientation, date TBD, and be present on move‑in day (July 5, 2026) from 12:30 pm‑4:00 pm. Prefects must be available for the entirety of the program.
SummaryPrefects must be rising seniors or recent graduates of The Lawrenceville School. Position responsibilities include helping to manage House life and community time and activities, supervising during meals, providing support during study hall and house check‑in times, facilitating afternoon and evening activities, on weekends, and assisting during House Cup activities. You may be expected to help create, plan, and execute daily activities, manage carpool, assist with classroom/dorm setup and other camp needs.
Crucially, prefects are expected to be the fun but responsible adults in a room full of younger students.
The Prefects work together with the Executive Director of LVSS, the Director of Community Engagement, the Director of Students, and the Heads of House to provide support, guidance, and supervision to the students enrolled in the program.
This is a fully in‑person position, as the essential functions of the role require direct, on‑campus engagement with students, faculty, and staff.
Essential Responsibilities- Facilitate afternoon and evening programs, and weekend trips/activities, that include structured outdoor physical activities (e.g., group walks, team sports, low and high‑impact fitness challenges, or nature‑based games) as part of the residential life curriculum.
- Prepare and set up all necessary equipment for afternoon activities.
- Escort students to Health and Wellness for required medications. Escort students to the dining center, supervise students during all three meals and manage their area in the dining center.
- Oversee students in their houses, including checking in the house halls and dormitories.
- Set high standards and lead by example.
- Earn and maintain the respect of students and staff.
- Provide support and guidance to students.
- Monitor and appropriately correct student behavior during activities, meals, and study hall.
- Supervise students during activities, meals, and study hall.
- Collaborate with the Dean of Students and the Director of Community Engagement to facilitate activities.
- Help troubleshoot technology.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or a combination of education and experience.
- A desire to serve students and to participate fully in an engaging academic community.
- Strong time‑management skills and the ability to complete tasks and meet deadlines.
- Outstanding communication skills, including the ability to use clear, concise and grammatically correct written and oral language in all professional interactions with students, their families, peers, the leadership team and the larger community.
- Tolerance for ambiguity and flexibility.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Able to remain calm in emergency situations.
- CPR and first aid certification preferred.
- Previous experience supervising children and young adults, preferably in a school or camp environment. Examples include, but are not limited to: babysitting, peer tutoring, serving as the captain of a sports team, camp counselor (at School Camp or elsewhere), prefect (especially in a Lower house at Lawrenceville) required.
- Prior residential supervision experience of children and/or young adults preferred.
